I'm working (on Co-Op) right now for a small manufacturing company. I am in school to be an industrial engineer, so my primary responsibilities are on the shop floor. My boss knows I'm good with computers, so he asked me to upgrade some of the PC's to win2k pro. I said fine, shouldn't be a problem......then I see the PC's he's talking about. He wants a Pentium 75Mghz with 16 MB of ram upgraded, and the other two aren't much better. Nothing with even a pentium II in them. I try explaining the concept of minimum requirements, but he doesn't wanna hear it.

So this morning I get to find out how blazingly fast a 75Mghz computer runs win2k, if it will install at all. Should be a good time.

Warn him now that they are not going to run very well, if at all. That way it won't look like you "did it wrong".

It would be interesting to hear how it went - don't forget to post back next week when they finally boot up! ;)

Minimum PC System Requirements:
Processor Type: Intel® Pentium® processor
Supports single and dual CPU systems

Processor Speed: 133MHz

Operating System: Windows 95/98/NT Workstation 3.51/NT Workstation 4.0

System Memory: 64MB RAM

Hard Drive Space: 2GB hard disk with a minimum of 650MB of available space

Video: VGA or higher resolution monitor

Drive Type and Speed: CD-ROM or DVD-ROM

Additional Requirements: Keyboard
Some Internet functionality may require Internet access and payment of a separate fee to a service provider and local charges may apply

Optional Requirements: Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device

I am pretty sure that the computer will stop the install b/c of lack of memory. If you try to install windows 98 and don't have enough RAM, It will tell you and quit the installation...

UUhmm. I don't even think those PC's qualify to run NT. Let alone 2K. But at any rate. Good Luck.

Well, let me withdrawl my last statement regarding NT.

According M$ NT requires this:

Intel-based:
 486 DX33 (or faster) or Pentium-based system
12 MB of memory (RAM); 16 MB recommended
120 MB of available hard disk space
CD-ROM drive or access the installation files over a computer
network
 VGA or higher-resolution display adapter
RISC-based:
Alpha AXP, MIPS R4x00 or PowerPC processor
16 MB of memory; 24 MB recommended
150 MB of available hard disk space

At least that's what my MCSE study guide says.

Granted I understand we're talking about Win2K here.

JR..

Well, I've told him it's not gonna work, I've shown him the microsoft website that lists the minimum requirements, but he wants to "just try it". So here goes.....

I'll probably be back in 20 mins once it won't install.

Your boss is an idiot. I'll bet he doesn't even have a reason for doing the upgrade other than "to have the latest OS"...thinking if he can somehow shoehorn Win2k on those dogs it will somehow justifty not buying new hardware.

Some (L)Users are so stupid.

Something I kept from a post for future reference LOL:D:D:D

To follow is my observations on being the "Net Admin / Support Guy"

Whether it is network related or not, everything is the fault of the network administrator.

There are always 1.5 cables for every available port.

The fact that a report printed fine yesterday does not necessarily mean it will print at all today.

Users will ask the same questions over and over and over?

The average user can remember no less than 26 birth dates, 44 telephone numbers, 15 addresses but can not seem to remember a 5 character password.

Any given run of Cat-5 cable will be exactly 4? too short.

If you have 6? patch cables in stock you?ll need 8? cables, if you have 8? patch cables in stock you?ll need 10? cables, if you have?

An idiot with a pair of wire cutters is a recipe for a network disaster.

In spite of what Microsoft says, R.A.S. really stands ?Really Ambiguous Stuff?

The ?CAPS LOCK? key spontaneously turns itself on when users aren?t looking.

The ?NUM LOCK? key spontaneously turns itself off when users aren?t looking.

Nobody is quite sure what the ?SCROLL LOCK? key does.

In spite of what most users believe, turning off the monitor is NOT the same thing as logging off.

If a given print job did not print the first twelve times a user sends it, it will most likely not print the next twelve times that it is sent.

Regardless of hard disk capacity it?s never quite enough to hold all of the user?s data.

Regardless of tape drive capacity it?s never quite enough to back up the full capacity of the hard disk(s).

The fact that it plugs into the wall does NOT make it the responsibility of the network administrator.

In spite of what Microsoft says, NT really stands ?Not Today?.

In spite of what Novell says, NW really stands ?Now What??.

Punch-Down tools have a ?designed-in? affinity for creating holes in the installers? fingers.

NEVER?EVER? buy a ?cheap? crimp tool and expect it to work properly.

Any given network design will require 1.5 times the cable specified by the designer.

Drive mappings don?t, firewalls won?t, security isn?t, proxy servers can?t, personal settings aren?t.

Design a foolproof system and only a fool can effectively use it.

A creative idiot can circumvent even the best security.

A network can be (a) Fast (b) Secure (c) Simple (d) Cheap. Pick three.

There?s always a ?cracker? out there with (a) more time than you, (b) more brains than you, and (c) more caffeine than you.

naw i know that the scroll lock is for, bang that puppy twice and hit the space bar and choose the next system.. at least thats what it does on the KVM switch. . .

win 2ooo will not work on a 75 i hope you don't have access to fire arms, . . because killing him won't help he'll still want you to install it once you both reach hell. . .

Well that was fun. :disgust:
Took a long time to get no where. Copied some files and low and behold:

"System does not meet minimum requirements. Refer to setuptxt directory on the Windows 2000 installation CD."

Needless to say, it didn't make it through the install. I did however manage to refrain from yelling "told ya so" at my boss.

Wasted most of my morning.

/me shakes head and goes back to spending time reading the forums.
