Help: black & white spiral on screen won't go away

My friend's sister keeps getting this wierd black & white spiral on her screen. It looks like the twirl they show in cartoons when a character is being hypnotized. The worst part is that it takes up almost the entire screen and all windows open BEHIND it!

I went into safe mode and it was gone. I ran MSCONFIG and unchecked a box for a program that was running at startup that I looked suspicious (Didn't have a description next to it). I thought that it fixed the problem. It booted fine, and I rebooted a few times and the spiral thingy didn't pop back up.

This was yesterday. Today, evidently, it has popped back up. Its really strange and I haven't seen anything like it.

Ideas, suggestions, comments? Seen this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

this is a virus, I'm pretty sure -- can't remember its name but I've heard of it -- check the most recent antivirus defs

Jfur, thank you sooooooooo much. That is exactly what it looked like. I guess I'd handled part of the steps necessary to remove it, but I'll make sure to finish that sucker off now!
