My mom has graciously agreed to let me assimilate her G3 Macintosh which is running OS X. I have found a CLI for OS X, but I haven't been able to find an equivalent to Seti Driver. Does anyone know of such a thing for OS X? If not, does anyone know how much slower the GUI is than the CLI on OS X? I am not sure my mom will remember the terminal commands to start up the CLI so I may put her back with the GUI if the difference is not too great.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think SETI is horribly slow on Macs now. You might want to check out OGR, it should run reasonably fast. :)

Actually her Mac just completed it's first WU in about 4 1/2 to 5 hours so it isn't too bad. If the GUI doesn't drop off alot from that performance I would like to switch her to that. She is not too computer saavy so I don't have the utmost faith in her ability to get the terminal commands right even though I wrote them down for her.

Stats thus far:

Total CPU Time 18 hr 06 min
Average CPU Time per work unit 3 hr 01 min 04.8 sec
Last result returned: Mon Dec 10 02:13:06 2001 UTC
Registered on: Sat Dec 8 23:32:05 2001 UTC

Next on the assimilation list:

Father's 1.33GHz Athlon T-Bird
Sister's Duron 850MHz
Brother's 1GHz T-Bird
Various Slow Machines at Work

Are you sure that's the right WU time? ;) Usually 1 GHz machines get 5 hour WU times! :Q

Yep I am sure. I installed the client around 3pm on the Mac and I had 4 WU's at the time from my Athlon. When I looked at 8:00pm my Athlon XP was getting ready to upload a new WU. I was watching the stats on my page alot because I was interested in seeing how long it took the Mac. At the time I checked at 8:00pm after I uploaded the 5th WU from my machine, the Seti page showed 6 uploaded so the Mac had finished its first.

Wow, that's weird. Never heard of anything like that before. :)

What speed is that G3?

450MHz. It is running the CLI for OS X. I downloaded the GUI at first, but I remember how crappy it was on my Athlon so I pulled down the CLI and started it up.

Apparently from what I can gather from MacAddict's SETI site the CLI is for OS X only so maybe the slow results that you have heard for Macs have been because everyone was running the GUI. But I have found out there that once you are set up all you have to do is drag and drop the seti client into the terminal program icon and it will run. I am pretty sure she can handle that so now I am not too worried about her being able to handle running the CLI.
