Edit: I was correct a quote from
This Site: "DO NOT use water on LCD monitor"
Um, except that according to that site, about 3/4 of the manufacturers
recommend using water and/or a little soap to clean the screen.
Water (with or without a small amount of soap) should be safe. Just make sure you use a *soft* lint-free cloth (like a lens cleaner cloth or something). Even paper towels can scratch the display slightly.
If water's not cutting it... your next best choice is probably isopropyl alcohol (try to get at least 90%; if you ask at the pharmacy, they may have 99%).
You can also try Windex ( the non-ammonia Windex if you can get it). Maybe cut it to half strength and give it a shot, then retry at full strength if that didn't help?
The risk is that either of these can damage/remove the anti-glare coating on some monitors. And then, while your monitor will be clean, the brightness/color will be uneven, which isn't very good either.
Do *NOT* use acetone (nail polish remover), benzene (paint thinner), or other solvents; anything that can harm plastic will irrevocably destroy your screen.
If the screen surface has actually been damaged/scratched by the pen, you will likely always have some mark there. The best you can do in this case is to remove the ink.
