Help: bad sound capture quality

I am capturing video using virtualdub. The video quality is good, however the captured sound pissed me, it is unlistenable.
I used cooledit to capture TV audio and the quality is good.
This is an onboard via sound card, which is connected to TV card by a CD audio cable( it needs three wires and I added the third wire to the cable). Also I tried line out and line in using a cable with tv card.
Does anyone know why the captured sound is so bad. I need to justify whether I need a good sound card.
Thanks ahead.

are you capturing it as cd quality stereo? are you compressing it? if so, are you compressing to mp-3?

have you checked out vcdhelp.com?

they have a good guide on video capture using virtualdub that i use ...sound comes out great.

might wanna check it out
