HELP, PLEASE!
I have a 3 year old P3 computer running Windows 95 upgraded to Windows 98. It has an IBM 9.1GB 7200rpm ATA/66 hard drive. Everything worked great yesterday, and other than deleting and installing some programs last week, I have made no system changes in months.
Today, when I started the computer, it got as far as:
"Verifying DMI Pool Data...........
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
_ "
At first I thought it was the hard drive because I heard clicking, but turns out the clicking is coming from the motherboard (?). The motherboard is an Abit BE6 with two ATA33 ide ports (1 & 2) and two ATA66 ide ports (3 & 4) with a Highpoint controller which the software for has to be installed after installing windows. Anyway, after trying a lot of other stuff (ie new hard drive), I unhooked my CD drive from ide 1 (ATA33) and my hard drive from ide 3 (ATA66) and hooked my hard drive up to ide 1. The system booted up (took a little while) but still makes clicking sounds from the motherbard. Also, when I tried to type in a new folder name, it just started beeping and typing "1111111111111..." until I hit escape. I backed up critical files on to zip drives, and haven't rurned off the computer yet.
I am wondering what to do next. Can I disable the ATA66 controller, or is it necessary? Do I need to change a setting for the hard drive. Yes, I don't know much about this, just planning to replace the damn thing in the next month, but need to get by for now. The computer is running, and I want to do whatever is necessary before I shut it down.
Any thoughts would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
