I ordered the Highpoint 300W PS from AlliancePC (remember the deal at the Hot Topics forum). I replaced the current PS form the ($29.99) case from AlliancePC (another Hot Topics deal) with the Highpoint. I'm using a MSI Pro2A MB (that I know is working). When I hit the power button, nothing happens. I connected the old PS (could be ATX 2.01 but it doesn't say on the PS) to the motherboard and plugged it in and the HS fan started spinning, so I know it's not the MB but the PS itself. I don't know what the the difference between the ATX 2.01 and ATX 2.03 standards, but could this be a problem? Does my MB not support ATX 2.03? Shouldn't the PS turn on automatically? Or simply, is the Highpoint PS DOA? I would greatly appreciate any advice.

A few easy things to do first.
Check your p/s and make sure the voltage select switch is set for 110 volts. Also,, make sure the power connector is properly seated on the mobo connector.
If you have access to a volt meter, turn the pc on using the new p/s. Check the voltage across the yellow and black leads of one of the accessory plugs coming from your p/s. You should read 12 volts. You can also check the red and black leads and read 5 volts.

NEXT,, BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU DO THIS. IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE,, YOU WILL FRY YOUR P/S OR YOURSELF!!!!!!!

Or,,,,,, unplug the p/s from the mobo and all other things on the pc.
Take a short piece of wire and "short the green to a black lead on the atx connector. The p/s should turn and you will read the voltages mentioned above. On the short piece of wire, just trim off enough of the ends to insert into the connector. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL!!!!!!!! THIS YOU DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

PghPooh,
I can't even read voltages because the PS doesn't come on. It doesn't turn on when you plug it in. I know that my other ones come on for a few seconds then power off and you have to press the power switch on the PC to get it to boot up. No, I really think that it's dead. The funny part is that it has all these QA "PASS" stamps on it. I wonder if they really check the voltages, the burn-in or if they simply just stamp the darn thing. I already e-emailed PCAlliance for an RMA. Still, does anyone know the difference between ATX 2.01 and 2.03? Thannks for the inputs.

HI
I don't think the differences in the form factors between 2.01 and 2.03 will cause any problems for you. The changes that were made were printed corrections in the specs and maybe tightening (sp) of the voltage tolerances on the p/s.
If you want some really boring reading on the form factor specs,,,
guaranteed to put you to sleep,,,:D jump over to this link and snooze,, I mean read away!!!!

Check the voltage selector like Pghpooh said, and completely substitute your known good unit for the suspect one. If that's OK, call for a RMA. It just happens, a small percent of all electronic components are DOA.
