i just picked up a p3 800 which came with a heatsink/fan in the retail box...problem is, it seems almost impossible for me to attach the heatsink/fan to the damn processor...the little metal clippy thing that is supposed to attach to the sides of the processor socket does not look as if it can possibly reach and i am scared that in cranking down on the unclipped end that i will slip and damage the mb...any advice please,,,,

cheers

I take that this is a Socket370 processor.

Look at the drawing below. This is what the Socket370 looks like. Now put the short end on the LEFT side and make sure it hooks on the little plastic hook. Now then you have the long end (the one with a slow bow in it) on the right side. Now this sounds scary but press it down and try to the little slot on the clippy to connect to the plastic hook on this side. It might look frightful but you will not break your CPU (its not an AMD Duron or Tbird with the core on top) It needs this kind of force so that it can make good contact to get rid of the heat.

Hope it helps :frown:

My screwdriver slipped when I was putting on my SK-6, and I didn't damage the motherboard. I also slipped when I was putting the heatsink of my old GF2 MX and I scratched the connectors, and that still worked. I'd say that computer parts are much tougher than most people think they are.
