Hi, I placed an order last night for a Tyan S2460 Dual Processor Mobo, and two Athlon XP 1500+ processors. I got a call from a guy a moment ago, telling me that the XP processor WILL NOT work on this tyan board, and that I would have to buy the Athlon MP 1500 instead.

My question is this.....does this guy know what he's talking about?? I was under the impression that the processor cores were the same, and therefore the regular Athlon XPs could be used on the Tyan board. Is this true?? I need to know for definite, if someone has actually tested and had them work....or not. HELP!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

XP's work fine. If you have extra money for this server I would suggest MP because they are supported by AMD in SMP. XP's are not. But they will work fine. Don't get mad at him, he's just doing what he's supposed to. Just explain to him that you are willing to take the risk nicely (There isn't really one).

This may be a bit of a gamble. Til now XP's have worked fine (mostly) in SMP configs. According to information from AMD this may change at some point, possibly soon.

XP's will work. The guy at the store was either misinformed or that was just his way to let you know that they aren't going to support it if you have problems.

I heard that the originally shipped Xp (s) could work in dual configs. However they have changed that supposedly, so if your lucky enuff to get one from an early batch .. your good .. if not .. well ...send it back ...

I have yet to hear of any (confirmed) reports of XP's failing to work in SMP because they have been specifically disabled. However reports are that AMD will be implementing some sort of SMP lock on XP's sometime in the next few weeks. Now whether or not this is BS to try and scare folks into buying MP's over XP's I don't know. How they can disable SMP in the chip I also don't know because I thought it was determined in the chipset/BIOS. I mean the K7's will work in dual configs and these are chips that were never even designed for SMP operation.

So the bottom line is you rolls the dice and you takes your chances.
