This is a repost from OT... so use to clicking on OT zzzz....

My friend has a DSL modem card... (something i have never really dealt with before)...

Basically the phone line goes into the input in the card...the card acts as a DSL modem... He logons in thru dial up lan... PPPoE...

He just bought a laptop and a router... his computer has a built in NIC...

Q: How do I configure his network settings to make the NIC assign an IP... so that I could hook up the WAN in port on his router ?

I dunno if I am making any sense.

You don't. You wisely save yourself the hassle and buy a normal DSL modem that you can run into the router.

Or you screw around with XP's Internet Connection Sharing and hope that you can make a desktop OS into a router it's not meant to be. But it will be much easier, more convenient, and more secure to use a standard DSL modem.

This is not the Off-Topic forum. You may need to wait a few hours, even a whole day, and certainly more than 16 minutes to get a response to your questions.

You need to use ICS, and connect the Wireless Router as an Access Point.

The Router's core IP need to be changed to fit ICS IP.

Setting the Router like this, Using a Wireless Cable/DSL Router as a Switch with an Access Point

Would it work? Yes

Would it work Stable and fast? Hmmm...

As said above a lot of grief would be saved if the Modem on a Card would be farmed and hang on the wall.

In other words, tell you friend to buy an External Ethernet Modem.

Example: Model 5515 ETHERNET ADSL Bridge Modem. ($69).

I told him the same thing... quick way is to go get an external modem... This is the first time that I've seen an internal DSL modem... reminded me of those internal ISDN's...zzz Neway the chap still pays like 50 bux for his DSL...

I've had similar issues with having two NICS on one pc...each receiving its own highspeed line... they keep on fighting for access that the line became so unstable... had to put in a switch and a router... this was back when i was Fserving/Dumping like crazy in the dorms...

I figure even if i did get it to work... he would get frequent drops...

Consider this case closed...

Thanks all...

lolz not as feisty as it is in OT... back to V for Vendetta... it was getting interesting...

BTW ICS blows... or maybe i sux at setting it up... plus the host PC has to always be on... a power waste in the long run...

qwest set up many systems in the northwest using stinger DSLAM's. The Intel 2100 modem card was about the only way to hook up to one of those nightmares. I tried using cisco 675 and a few other modems, but gave that up after a while. ICS may blow, but it beats wasting an interminable amount of time trying to make unsupported hardware work.
The connection I was trying to properly network was only 20 bucks a month, and unheard of price for dsl back in 2002. It was also the only show in town, so to speak.
I set up ICS using a win2k box.

Hmmm...I was never able to get ICS to work properly with the Intel 2100 PCI card. This was with a friend's Windows 98SE. I could get a single PC working, but as soon as the first ICS client computer connected, it'd crash the host PC.

I bought them a Cisco 675 from eBay and that worked great for a couple of years until they switched to Cable Modem.

ICS in win98 was a kluge <shudder>.
I was using 2k, the ICS was as stable as that computer. (kids would hose that up from time to time);)
