help assembling a nice PC tool kit

QueBert

Lifer
I've been doing PC Consulting/repair for awhile now. I've never been super serious about it. But recently I've thought about really going at it. Getting shirts with a logo, a nice set of tools the whole nine. So I can come off as more professional.

I need help finding decent tools, maybe even a pre-assembled set that won't break the bank, but will be quality. Currently I have a cheapy zipper case set I got years ago when I took some Novel training classes. They serve the basics fine, but they look crappy. I guess if I want to get more business I need to actually come across like I'm for real hehe.

I found a few spots online that have really nice sets, but they have too many tools I'll never need, and cost way too much. I want a solid set with all the basics + a nice carying case, that's all. Any suggestions where I can find somewhere online that'll let me customize a set. It's either that or the $39 44 pc Belkin set @ Staples, which is just another cheapy looking zipper case set, in a bigger zipper case 🙂

thanks

I don't think the quality of your toolcase is going to impress anyone. As long as you don't find yourself wishing you had something frequently, stick with what you have.

Get one of these if you are doing quite a bit of work on PC's... it might cost a bit, but well worth it in the end. I promise... you will thank me in the end.

Dang 55 bucks for a ratcheting screwdriver, is that the average price or is it expensive cause its snap on? Also what advantages are there to this as opposed to a 20.00 dollar electric screwdriver?

The ratcheting mechanism is very fine (rather than the course clunky craftsman mechanisms) and lends itself well to computer work. It is that expensive probably because it is Snap-on, but I have had one since 92 and trust me... if you are working on computers... especially on the move... it kicks an electric screwdriver's arse. It is magnetic, doesn't need a recharge, is light, compact, comfortable, and doesn't strip a screw or torque a mobo if you aren't paying that much attention.

But then.. it's entirely my opinion though.

I bought a canvas tackle bag w/shoulder strap at Wal-Mart and it has served very well as a mobile tool box. It even came with empty bait containers which made perfect screw/standoff/cable/rj-45 ends etc storage bins.

EDIT: This is it here, but mine is blue.

I got this magic screwdriver from sears for $15 a few years back.

Got one of those myself for about $5 at the local hardware store.

yeah but my sears screwdriver 0wns your local hardware store screwdriver 😛

its also magnectic and has a nice grip at the very tip so you can keep the screwdriver lined up with the screws fairly well.

I'd just piece something together actually. Craftsman tools mainly and some nice bag or plastic carrying case.

Try this: http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20020820/index.html

What's the saw and hammer for?

maybe it's for older Dell/Compaq/HP cases where you need a friggin degree just to get the case off? 🙂

thanks for all the replies, I should have been a bit more descriptive in I wanted a case that has a good layout and is easy to lug around. My Ex boss had a nice metal breifcase looking one but it was $200 bucks for the case alone (too much) I don't need a $500 setup. Just something with enough to work with. I appericate the feedback I already have ideas. That Snap-On screwdriver looks SWEET! 55$ is a bit much but I bet I can find it cheaper elsewhere 🙂

I will list the contents of my kit that I carry around tommorow. It is very long, but cheap, and has 99% of what you will need at a customer's home.

I am going to sleep how 🙂

You might want to look at one of these Craftsman tool bags.
You might also pick up a set of craftman screw drivers while you are there.

If you are wanting an aluminum tool brief case, you might check harborfreight, as they have some cheap ones:
17-3/4'' x 12-3/4'' x 5-5/8''
11-1/2'' x 7-1/2'' x 4-1/2''

You mighth also consider picking up an electric screwdriver, as they are handy to have, especially when you have to put a dozen case screws back in.

That briefcase looks pretty nice, might look at it there is a Haborfreight 2 miles from me. That case on the THG tool story owns but he said he just got lucky finding it, I can't spend 2 months tracking down a fvckin case

on THG he said the tool case he bought has a US made version by Black & Decker called the "workmate"

I went to their web site and only thing workmate is a work bench. I searched their web site for anything with no luck, also googled and still came up with nothing, except some UK sites, and I'm sure the overseas shipping would be killer.

this is the case I'm talking about it's not too fancy and has tons of room. Would be perfect for what I need. I just got back from Lowes, I took them a picture I printed of the Black & Decker one. They have no idea about it.

The article on THG is old (xmas 2002) has anyone seen this tool case in question? either the B&D or the Keter. I'm going to hit the Black & Decker outlet tomorrow and see if I can maybe dig it up there.
