I recently assembled a new system, and it is giving me some troubles :( It just beep whenever I try and start it.

I have a 80gig barracuda as a hard drive, and a 16/10/40 Plextor as my cd-rw. The hard drive is a primary master and the cd-rw is a secondary master. I re-seated the RAM, video card, and I took out all of the other PCI cards. I reset the CMOS, and I even made sure to plug in fans to both the CPU headers on my motherboard - yet it continues to beep at me :(

My "system" is as follows:

Tyan Tiger MP rev1.3
2x Duron 700MHz (with ASII applied to both
2x semi-crappy HSF (temporary until I get my Thouroughbred's and SK6's)
4x Crucial PC2100 DDR Registered RAM
VisionTek GeForce3 ti200 video card
Seagate Barracuda IV 80gb 7200rpm ATA100
Plextor 16/10/40A Burner
All in a SX1030B with the stock Antec 300W PSU

The only thing I can think of, is maybe I chipped one of the cores? I was very carful, so this is pretty unlikley.....

Any help/ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, -Jeff

If those are your only two devices, then the hard drive should go as the Primary Master, and the Plextor should go as the Secondary Master.

Set the hard drive to either Master or Cable Select (Master preferred).

Thanks for the quick reply Andy. One more question - I will probably be adding another CD-ROM drive, and another hard drive soon. How would you guys suggest I go about doing this?

Also, if I have an OS installed on both of the hard drives, will it boot from the one that is a master?

I don't think the configuration is critical. But I have my two HDs on the primaryIDE cable, and then my DVD-ROM as secondary master and CD-RW on secondary slave.

By default it will boot from the Primary Master, although you have the ability to change this in the BIOS.

Update: Well, I set everything up as AndyHui detailed, and I am still getting beeps :( What other reasons would it be beeping for?

Check that your CPU, video card and RAM are seated correctly.

Another Update: I re-seated my RAM and video card, and I took out all the other PCI cards. Still beeping :( I made sure to connect fans to the two CPU headers, and I have a mouse and keyboard plugged in too. My only thought is that maybe I chipped one of my Durons while putting the HSF on? I sure hope not!

How many beeps are you getting?

You should check your motherboard manual for an explanation of beep post codes.

Well, I read my manual, and it said if there was beeping, then you should check to see if the cable was installed backwards. I don't think I put the cable in backwards :)

Thanks for all the responses, and I'm stll looking for helpful ideas!

Check your jumper settings. Where pin-1 is on the mobo and what the manual seems to indicate are backwards. (at least to me) Also, disconnect your floppy and hard drive cables temporarily - same thing with pin-1 being not quite what the manual seems to indicate. Check your RAM - some people have problems with modules (Crucial especially) not fitting well - go down to one stick and make sure it is seated well.

What are the beep codes? They do mean something you know.

If none of this works, go down to one CPU. If that doesn't work, try the other one alone.

Are the 700MHz Durons SMP capable? I thought only the newer ones were.

I'm starting to think it's the CPU's. Yeah, I have the older Durons, but I thought I read somewhere that they were SMP capable. They're just temporary until i get some thouroughbred's. Anybody know when these are supposed to come out?

Also, would I be able to run the system with just one of the durons?
