Hi,

I just purchased a new LG L203WT LCD display and I love this thing. I have an Asus A7N8X-DX, Athlon 3200+ @ 2.3 ghrz, a gig of ram and a 36 mb, Raptor hd. My machine is quick and stable; I'm happy with it and intend to keep it for a couple more years.

However, since I bought this display, I'd really like to get the best out of it and am looking at new video card options. I currently have an ATI 9600 pro, use the machine for an r/c sim, IL2, photoshop, some video and primarily for text.

I know the new 7600 GT is available, in agp, but I also hear that ATI may have improved offerings in a month or two. And, some suggest the X800XL, which seems to get great reviews, better than the 850 and 1600 pro. So, to say the least, I'm left a little confused.

For certain, though, text image quality is of primary importance as reading is what I do mostly and my vision is weakening.

Any and all information would be appreciated.

thanks,

John

In AGP, it's going to be slim pickings in the future. Right now your best choices are the X800XL and the 7600GT (if it's truly in AGP). You might be able to get the X850XT for cheap, too, if you get a good deal for it. For around $150, it's an excellent card.

Thanks, Aflac,

of these choices, would the 7600 Gt be the best? Yes, they're available:

http://www.leadtek.com/3d_graphic/winfast_a7600_gttdh_1.html

and EVGA is due to release their version, any day now.

As I said, though, 2d is almost more important to me than 3d. The local salesman said this is no longer much of an issue (Nvidia vs ATI) as they're all good in 2d; is this true?

thanks,

John

If all you are worried about it 2d , most integrated graphics solutions will take care of that just fine. So yea, any of those cards will do the trick.

Acegazda,

the only version of the X850XT that I can find for that price is PCI-Express. Is there an AGP version for that price?

thanks,

John

ohhh. no it's $30 more @ newegg... but in canada, i'd have to look around. The agp x1600pro is $110 US, that might be a good option to consider...

acegazda,

thanks.

I've been researching this site:

http://www.gpureview.com/

almost all day and comparing cards:

I've read the new 7600 gt will outperform the X800/850 series, but when you compare specs, it seems hard to believe, given half the bit rate of the 7600 gt?

Also, the X1600pro, doesn't seem to compare to any of these other cards, via specs only.

Anyway, $30 more seems reasonable for the 850XT ... can you point me to it?

There's also the All-in-Wonder version, available in Canada for ~ $200.00 cnd.

And, the 850Pro is very reasonable, from ATI Canada, but is a locked card? lol

And, yet, I hear there's an RV560 in the works, slated for an October release?

It's all very much confusing !

Thanks for your repsonses and help. Any and all information much appreciated.
