[Help]Aopen Nvidia 6600 GT

I just put my system together yesterday and I got my Nvidia 6600GT today in the mail.

I installed it and played games with it fine. I then went to run 3dMark03. I got to test 3 and midway through my system just crashed. I kept rebooting, but the monitor said no VGA signal. I had to clear the CMOS in order to get back up and running.

Now, when I try to run the games I get artifacting. What is the problem. I have installed the latest drivers (10/18/2004).

The model is an Aopen 6600GT

System Specs:

2.8GHz P4 520
1GB Corsair RAM
Aopen Nvidia 6600GT

I am also running the latest Direct X. I uninstalled the driver completely and ran the 3D Flowerbox screensaver and there was no artifacts. Maybe it is the driver?

Someone help.

Oh boy, another bad AOpen 6600 GT! There's a member on this board, Kenmitch, who already went through 2 AOpen 6600 GTs and they both didn't work. But when switching to another brand, there were no problems.

It seems as if almost all of the AOpen 6600 GTs are of a bad batch. Your best bet would be to return it and try another brand.

It sounds like your cooler isnt working right. RMA the card, and if u dont trust that brand, get a different one.

Ditch the Aopen....Doing the same thing that the 2 I tried did.

Chaintech works for me 🙂
eVga working for others
sparkle working for others
Aopen....Don't know if working for anyboday yet?

Comparing pictures they pretty much look the same....Only diff I could really see between the two of them was on the Chaintech it doesn't have the VPU(?) on the back of the card ? If you go to newegg you can look at the pictures and see for yourself.

I wonder if the VPU(?) or whatever that chip is somehow is causing the problems?

I have been experiencing similar problems with the Aopen 6600GT on a new system I built. My first board worked fine in 2D mode for several hours until I had finished installing WindowsXP. However, after 3 or 4 minutes of testing the 3D in Doom3, it dropped dead in a manner similar to what you described. (no video signal, reboot, etc.) I tried everything to fix the problem but ended up ordering a replacement card.

I installed a replacement board and everything looked like it was working. I immediately did several hours of 3D tests and the board seemed fine. I then went back to installing software and finishing the system setup process. At the end of the day when I tried to use 3D mode it no longer worked! (2D is fine) It seems that no matter what 3D mode or resolution I try at this point I end up with severe artifacts. (Even with low-res windows screen saver previews) I have installed new drivers, and checked all the BIOS settings--No luck. At this point I am pretty annoyed with the whole mess.

I have a feeling that this is a defect with the AOpen board. I am going to try to get a Chaintech 6600GT and hope that works better since it seems to be working for other people.

My system specs:
3.4GHz P4 550
Abit AA8 Duramax MB
1GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 RAM
450W P/S
AOpen Aeolus 6600GT

I'd be very interested to hear from somebody that has actually been able to get the Aopen 6600GT board to work...

Ya, I went ahead and ordered the Chaintech 6600GT from ZZF, we'll see on Tuesday or Wednesday if it works - which it will 😀

Damn....Another Aopen 6600GT horror story....Wish I never found it in stock at Mwave 🙁

I lost count that makes how many dead Aopen's 6? 8? confirmed all with the same problems.

Ya, unfortunately this is a big blow to Aopen. I believe that this 1st gen batch of cards are all defective. I have seen many widespread reports of the same problem as well.

For now, stay away from this brand.
