Okay here's the deal:
I've been going through the interviewing process for a reputable M&A boutique in Charlotte (that's mergers & acquisitions for the uninitiated.) For my 3rd round of interviews, I need to prepare a case study. This involves studying the current business operations of a former client and suggesting a suitable target company for acquisition. I need to find a 'match' based on the client's geographic influence, current service offerings, strategic issues and financial situation. I have done this kinda work in an academic environment (college) where data was readily available. For the firm I need to study, however, a lot of data is unavailable.
The client firm is a Canadian e-business integrator and e-services provider. Though the company is publicly traded (TSE 300,) a lot of the fundamentals come up as 'N/A'--including market cap!! I've checked with American financial websites and Canadian ones, and both are lacking the same data. Without this type of data, finding a suitable match is difficult. The annual reports at the company's website are of no help either. Because I don't know who might be reading these forums, I do not wish to divulge the name of the company unless its by PM.
For this assignment, we cannot use the M&A firm's inhouse database so I'm stuck using the Internet/public library. Any suggestions?
