HELP.....Any ideas on this? Win98

Sluggo

Ihave a IBM laptop with Win98 installed that I am working on for a friend. It seems that the registry or something is really screwed up, missing files or something.

It will boot to Windows, then lock up declaring errors in almost every start up program.

If I disable all the start up programs in msconfig it is more stable, but still not great, it will show errors on Windows Explorer when you try to get to files

If I try to get to safe mode, it brings up a command prompt, then the keyboard will not operate correctly, putting a ^ symbol before the letters.

Norton showed no viruses upon booting to a Norton program.

So is the whole install basically FUBARed? It does not seem to have any good registry back-ups in it, and you cant even run regedit without it crashing.

Of course the laptop has no CD-ROM so, I cant re-install windows without putting on some kind of external drive, and it isnt stable enough to let me load any drivers for any external drives.

I'm really at a loss, any ideas would be appreciated.

Sounds like it's drive flushing time to me.
Can you add the external drive drivers to a 98 bootdisk of some sort?

Yeah, but as you might have guessed, I think there is ZERO information on the laptop backed up. I got it stable enough to run scandisc and defrag, I have high hopes 😀
