i am racking my brains over a problem trying to get xp pro installed on my new rig. it is an athlon xp 1800 with an msi KT3 Ultra mobo, 512 megs of pc2100 ram, a dvd rom drive, and a burner, on board audio, and a geforce 3. the system keeps crashing during the begining of the install. it get past the inspecting your hardware, goes to the blue screen and asks for loading scsi drivers and all, then loads the windows executive, and then loads some other stuff and then dies when it tries to load the kernel debugger dll. i tried loading win 2k, but it still crashed early into the instalation. i have tried 2 mobo's. no go. any tips? anyone seen this problem before? help?

Try the most basic level install. Remove anything non-essential like modems, 2nd cd-rom drive (only connect either the burner or the dvd but not both), network cards, sound cards. The go into the bios and disable any onboard things like onboard sound and onboard modem or nic or anything like that. Also disable the bios virus protection and any other builtin virus protections.

So you machine should only have motherboard, cpu (+ fan), memory, hard drive, cd-rom device, and video card installed. And all onboard features should be turned off, and all built in virus protection should be disabled.

Then try and install.

If that works add your other components back into the machine and install them that way.

Off the top of my head I would say that onboard sound or builtin virus (like for the bios) protection are most likely your problem
