mines kinda different than the posts i saw when i used search (i used it yay!)

i have a a7v133 and im running 2 30g hard drives in the RAID controllers (but not using RAID), a DVD, and i just stole a 1g hard drive from an old computer.

i just made a boot disk with the 7.2 cds, but i boot and it says that linux wasnt able to boot or something like that.... what do i do?

and once i have the thing booting, what should i do to get it to install?

sorry im a linux newb 🙁

What about booting directly from the CD? I too have had weirdness with their floppy images, but burning off the CD has never let me down.

SUOrangeman i assume you meant booting there and not burning...

best way to prep for the install is use partition magic, and create the linux partition and swap file partition, then boot to the CDs like SUOrangeman was suggesting. then linux will find the partitions and install VERY easily.

how big should i make my partitions?

linux doesnt support the raid controller thats on my motherboard does it? if not ill move my current c:\ drive that has win2k installed and partition that with linux...

Actually...its the company that makes your raid controller does not support linux... 😀

But if you just want to play around with Linux...you can fit everyhing off a RedHat or Mandrake install into a partition about 5-6 GB.. That is pleanty... You could do 4 GB most of the time if you didnt install everything.

You don't need to spend the cash on partition magic.
Every distro comes with Linux Fdisk (not friendly), or in the case of Mandrake Disk Drak.
Just get into the BIOS and change the boot sequence so the first drive to machine should check is your CD then boot with the CD and answer the questions.

The last time I installed MD 7.2 I installed everything and it took about 1.6G. Double that for some breathing room.
