Help: Analog better than DVI?

Hey all...

I just picked up a Hansol H950 (Samsung 191t) locally. Here is the situation. It is looking much better in analog mode than in digital. I have a couple of theories, but I will get to those in a moment.

Here is the main problem. Using the digital capability, when I play DAoC in windowed mode, the entire screen flickers and jumps around. I also notice some ghosting (to be expected) in many other games. In addition, my WinTV video looks like crap. There seems to be a lot of "snow" in it whether it is full screen or windowed.

Just for fun, I thought I would hook up the monitor in analog mode and see what happened. Using the monitors "Auto" mode, everything looks great. The colors are far more rich, and I seem to notice less ghosting in games. The flickering that occured with DAoC is gone. The TV looks fabulous in both a window and full screen. Much better than my Samsung 900p ever looked.

So what is the deal? I know that this should not be the case.

Here is my current setup... (or at least the important stuff)

Abit NF7-S
Athlon XP 2100+ @2GHz
1 GB Kingstion HyperX memory
PNY GForce3 Ti200
Hauppauge WinTV

My theories are this.

1. Perhaps a bad DVI cable, but that would not explain why it jumps around only with the one game
2. The GF3 Ti200. I'm not sure if these earlier cards had good DVI or not. When I bought the card, it really wasn't used that much. I bought this particular card just in case I ever wanted to use DVI.

Any thoughts? I don't want to have to return this monitor (a gift from the wife... got to love her) if I don't have to.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing it's your Ti200.

Here's an interesting article discussing the state of DVI technology: ExtremeTech

Keep the monitor. Use analog for now. Read reviews and upgrade to a better video card later (you're going to upgrade eventually anyway).

Check to see the resolution and refresh when you are running off the DVI cable. I found that my Samsung 191t wouldn't do native 1280x1024 at 60Hz with my Radeon 9500 Pro, even with the right monitor INF (it either wanted to do 1280x978 at 60Hz, or 1280x1024 at 75Hz, neither of which is acceptable). No amount of driver tweaking would solve the problem ... eventually, just did a Catalyst driver re-install and it rebooted to the right mode automatically after that.

So you might want to try an Nvidia driver re-install when in DVI mode, to see if that helps your problem. I find it looks superb in DVI mode ... absolutely no display problems. But analog should be fine as well, if you need to leave it there ... from reviews I've seen, it doesn't make much of a difference anyway.

Thanks for the input so far.

I have already done the driver thing... I even tried INFs from both Hansol and Samsung. They both worked, but they also both had the same problem.

The monitor looks fine in windows, but falters with the TV viewing and games in digital mode.

I have it running in analog mode right now. I may see if I can borrow a friends GF4 some time this week and try it out with that.

I've been playing the Jedi Academy demo with it in analog, and the ghosting really doesn't bother me.

My geforce 3 ti500 dvi is messed up too. I'm running on DVI. Try and see if there is a bios update for your card, it may solve ur problem.

edit: I'm actually running on VGA, i typed this message when i woke up, thats why i wrote dvi:eek: Before I did the bios update my card would not even work on DVI. The Bios update made the dvi work, but the colors were screwed up, thats why i decided to run on vga.

That is an idea... I can't seem to find any information on bios updates for any PNY Graphics cards. Any help?

Or it could be the GeForce3 (which I would bet it is in this case). If you had a GeForce4 MX or another newer card (even a low-end one) to test I bet it would look much better...

Ok...

I'm 99% sure that it is my aging GF3 Ti200.

I'm not quite ready to upgrade my video card, but most likely I will by the end of the year, or the beginning of next year. I will just return the monitor for now, and repurchase one along with my video upgrade. I will probably go with a 9800Pro or XT when things settle down.

Perhaps by then, there will be a 16ms 18-19" panel out. Anybody know of anything coming up?

Thanks again for all of the help.
