Help an overclocking 'virgin' get an E6300 stable

Hi,

What I have is an E6300 on a DS3 with Corsair VS DDR2667.
My first goal is to get stable at 2.33Ghz so this is what I did.

FSB to 333
mem multiplier to x2
timings to 5,5,5,15
FSB volts +0.1
CPU volts 1.325
mem volts default.

Most apps & games bomb out with "encountered problem" error.

Revert to stock and the machine is totally ROCK solid.

What do you suggest I try?...I thought this was a very modest overclock.

mem multiplier x2? try x1 😀 I don't have an conroe system, so I don't know what I'm talking about. But try to see the real mem frequency with cpu-z (very useful utility for overclocking)
 
2x is actually 1:1, so that's correct.

I'd try upping vdimm by one or two notchs.

Are you saying that you've already verified that your RAM will run at 2.5x266? If so, it doesn't change the fact that some motherboards require an additional .1v vdimm, when overclocking the cpu, even if the memory isn't overclocked. Also, you should download this: SpeedFan, and tell us what your voltages are running at stock cpu speed. With that power supply, you may very well be using 100% of what it can provide, even before overclocking.
 
OK, Fired up Speedfan, not too sure what i'm looking at but voltages at stock are:
vcore1 =1.22v
vcore2 =1.79v
3.3v = 3.33v
5v = 4.95v
+12v = 0.00v
-12v = -16.97v
-5v = -6.41v
+5v = +5.16v
vbatt = 3.22v

So what do we glean from that?

your vcore is 1.22v. It needs to be a bit higher. vcore2 = memory. it is a bit low as well. Maybe give them each .1 more.
 
Haha, that would all depend on what your +12v rail is running. It's by far the most important. I wonder why it's reading 0.00?
 
I was hoping you could tell me that!!

I don't like some of those readings, latest vcore1 is 1.18v! shouldn't that be 1.31v?

I think i'll go shopping...can you recommend a reliable unit without going overboard, I like quiet so how about Seasonic S12 430w? - £47 over here.
 
The S12's are nice psu's, but unless you're running much of a video card, or are planning on buying more expensive RAM, so you can overclock higher, that would be more than enough, if not a bit too much. The 430 watt S12 has about twice as much power as the psu you have now. Unless you're planning on getting a higher powered video card, the 380 watt S12 would be plenty.
