heres the deal, i have an internal dsl modem, with bellatlantic infospeed as my provider, i want to hook up another computer and share the dsl connection, i have been messing with sygate with nothing really happening, i have the modem and one nic in one computer and another nic in the other computer, i searched for some stuff on internal modems and sharing but can't find much, can anyone help me setting this thing up?
oh, one other thing the computer with the dsl is on win95 and the other is win98, should i switch them, or make them both win98?
thanks

i am not sure if win98 have internet sharing built in but i know win98se have it. You can also use another program such as winroute which works pretty good. You just have to follow the instructions to set it up.

can you setup file and print sharing? that's the first part to getting network internet connection sharing working, the two computers have to see each other

mess around for a bit, i can't even get the computers to recognize eachother, and i set up all the network neighborhood stuff, i have one idea

If you're connecting one computers NIC to the other computers NIC, you need a crossover cable. If you're connecting the computers thru a hub, you can use regular patch cables.

Considered using a Cable/DSL router? They work pretty well and it's nice to have the security of a hardware firewall between you and the 'net. Also solves your problem of sharing an internet connection without one PC depending on the other. I use the Linksys and I'm very happy with it.

can't use router because i have an internal modem, whats the difference with the cables, right now the cable i'm using is a little bigger than a regular phone jack, i used to use it at my college dorm for the t1 connection

OOPS! Missed that part! 😱

Sorry!

Difference in cables... The larger one is an RJ-45 and the smaller one is RJ-11. One is generally for connecting networks (usually CAT5) and the other for phone/fax stuff (CAT3?).

A crossover cable essentially connects the transmit to the receive and the receive to the transmit when going from computer to computer. The cable you have sounds like a standard patch, which means you're connecting the transmit to the transmit and the receive to the receive.
