Help: AMD XP heatsink retention clip, How Much Force?

I'm installing (or trying to install) an AMD XP 1800+ with a retail heat sink and fan into an Abit NV7-133R motherboard. I have the CPU locked in the socket, and I'm trying to attach the heat sink via the retention clip. It seems like it takes a ton of force to get the clip to bend. How much force does it take? I don't want to break the thing.

Here (pdf format) is a guide by AMD that shows you how to install a heatsink properly. Always check the position of the heatsink to make sure you are installing it properly.

Use a screwdriver or needle nose pliers to push down on the clip, you'll kill your fingers otherwise. Whatever you do, only exert pressure on the clip.

A lot for a good clip that conforms to AMDs spec. If it happens, you will not be the first to slice the plastic numbs off the socket, or crush the edges of the core. Usually the core still works. (I know.)
