I am having a recurring graphics card driver problem.
I recently got an XFX 7950 DD at a ridiculously low price from a reputable dealer (I think it was a pricing error).

However I am having recurring driver issues with games:

1). CIV 5 crashes regularly. Sometimes I can load into the game in DX 11 mode and play a few turns sometimes it crashes at the save game loading splash screen. The game will freeze, music continues, and when I minimise it to desktop I often see this error: FGX Renderer 11:: Present failed hr= DXGI_error_device_removed driver failure. DX9 mode is much more reliable although I have had a crash using it.

2). Skyrim will sometimes crash to a white screen. Often if I can play a few minutes it will allow me to play for a while and sometimes it doesn’t crash

3). Mass Effect 3. Often fine but has also started crashing every so often in a similar way to Skyrim (bar the screen going white).

And also when using Windows 7 (64 bit):

4). I get recurring graphic driver failures and then messages that it’s recovered. When this happens the screen will freeze for a few seconds, sometimes flicker and then recover. This is the same message that appears on the right of the task bar when a game crashes. Tends to happen with web-browsing more than word processing etc - wondering if this is Flash using the gpu?

Less frequently the screen will die entirely and I have to restart - but this is very infrequent compared to the above.

My system: Qx6700 @3ghz MSI p67 Platinum Motherboard, 600 watt Zalman PSU. The PSU has two 6 pin power connectors for supporting crossfire or SLI. I’ve used both available connectors to power the one 7950.

Just prior to installing the new card I had cloned my system disk onto an SSD. I would have done a clean install but I am planning to upgrade to IB in the next few weeks and so didn’t want the hassle of a clean install twice.
Driver 12.4 is more stable than any of the subsequent drivers, especially in Windows, but still is not great. I have tried reinstalling with driver sweeper and without and it’s the same result. Errors 1 - 4 still occur with all available AMD drivers just with varying frequency. I haven't found a totally stable one.

My main question is could it be because I cloned my system disk? I’ve not had any other issues with other systems – just graphics. I guess it could also be a hardware fault with the card but would I keep getting driver-specific errors if it were? o_O

Thanks very much in advance for your help!

newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHz LGA 775 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80562QX6700

The processor has been overclocked from 2.66GHz to 3.0GHz.

The video card has been physically removed from the system, or a driver upgrade for the video card has occurred. The application should destroy and recreate the device.

I have a ATI 6950, and I had this problem too. To fix this issue I went into Catalyst Control Centre - Performance - Clock Controls and turned the fan speed to 100 and increased the Power Control Settings to 10%.

Since making the above change I have played for numerous hours without issue where before I would get maybe 10 minutes.

I do not think the problem is due to transferring a system image to an SSD. Are you using the AHCI driver setting in the BIOS for the SSD? You should be.

I expect the problem is with alterations to the Catalyst Controls, drivers, or hardware failure.

I would bet a large ice cream for your card being defective. RMA it.

There are numerous MIS P67A type motherboards. Can you please provide a full model number and perhaps a link to the NewEgg listing?

Sorry, it's a P965 Platinum. I misremembered the chipset number: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/P965-Platinum.html

It's a really old motherboard now. I am running it AHCI.

The processor was overclocked to 3.2 Ghz and stable on my AMD 5770. I reduced the overclock to 3.0 Ghz to see if that helped, but it hasn't. I suppose I could take off the overlclock entirely but I doubt that's the issue.

I've read that CIV 5 thread before actually but the suggested solutions don't help unfortunately.

The card was sold as used which may mean the chance of a fault with the card is higher I guess. It's still under warranty though.

Thanks for your help.

With the video card still under warranty, then it seems like RMA'ing it is the solution.
