Help adding space to an existing partition (Windows 2000 Server)

OK long story short, Windows used to be on the C: partition, but due to some corruption it had to be re-installed on the D: partition while leaving C: intact so I could retreive the data from it.

Now Windows is installed on D: but it is running out of space. I do not want to re-install on C: again and add it to the domain, re-do all the security settings, etc again.

Any way to move some of that unused space from C: to D:?

Here is a better idea. Perform a repair install on the C: partition. If its just a bit of curruption in the OS then a repair install should be able to fix the problem. There was proabably no real need to reinstall the OS on a differnt partition.

But either way if you want to shrink or exspand a partiton you'll need some sort of partioning software like Partiton magic. There are other spplications availible and some are even free.

It had mucho viruses and adware thanks to a user using it as a workstation temporarily. I tried to get rid of it all, to no avail. The new OS has been running for 6 months now and I need to keep the D: version of the OS.

Will partition magic extend a windows partition? Might have to look into it. Thanks

You are likely going to need a Server-specific partition manager. Especially since you are trying to modify a system partition.

Personally, I'd:

1) Back up all partitions.

2) Buy a new drive (or a pair if you are using RAID 1) and clone the System volume to the new drive.

3) Once the new drive is booting, you reformat the original disk to a single volume [ C: ] and copy your data back to it.

Since you don't want to re-install your OS, you'll need to keep the boot drive letter as [ D: ]. Offhand, I don't know how you do that, but I'm sure you can.

Doing it this way will give you larger System and Data partitions and gives you an instant way to go back to the original state if something goes wrong during the migration.

If you are confident in your abilities (and ambitious about learning to do new things) when working with computers, you can try GNU parted.
Its a FREE linux based program that works quite well in creating, removing or resizing partitions..
You can download the program, burn it and boot from the cd.

There are excellent sites for help and guidance in using the program.

Just be careful and BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST.

Check here and READ about it before you try it.

you can also move data to another drive or partition and create space.
For example, the "my documents" folder on the desktop is usually created on the same drive/partition as the OS.
However, you can move it to another drive/partition while keeping the icon on the desktop.

Right click on the folder [my documents] clik on properties.
You'll see the address of the current location. If not clik "Target" and it will show you.

you'll see a button marked "move".
if you click it you can physically move all data in the folder to another drive/partition while keeping the icon on the desktop.
if you move the folder to another location (drive or partition) this will free up space for windos to use.
it may not be much but you can do the same for may other files, like games.
you can do system files though.
