All,

Thank you for looking at my problem. Your advice is appreciated.

My Northbridge Chipset fan has gone out. This is the second in 3 years time. It is for an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe montherboard. (Illustration: http://usa.asus.com/100/images/products/375/375_l.jpg )

Can I get away and put a heatsink on that doesn't use a fan? This swapping out of fans is getting old quick... Has anyone heard of this being done?

Here is what I'm thinking of putting on it.

I had the same thing happen 3 weeks ago, my new fan showed up last week and it's not hard, just a little time consuming to pull all the cards, pull the mobo out and then release the fan pins. Takes about 35 minutes, it's just annoying that this seems to happen so often for you.

I would suggest searching for "Asus chipset fan" for more info. I went through two replacement fans from Asus on my A8N-SLI board before putting on the Zalman and the 40 mm Papst fan.
I got that board in December 2005. Ran it until about feb. of 2007 when one of the ram slots went south and burned up a stick of Crucial. It was a big headache trying to figure out what was wrong with the comp-strange errors and sporadic shutdowns, finally traced to the ram. Thinking it was the memorie's fault, Crucial sent me a new stick for free; as soon as I installed it I ran Memtest and it showed errors right away. Jumped through all the hoops with Asus to get an rma for the board, but decided to give up.
I got so po'd at Asus I went and bought an Intel 6600 and 975 BX2KR board and have not had a single issue, rock solid. Good luck with your board.

I'm ordering my 975BX2KR this week. Now that Intel supports overclocking, I don't plan to look back. From now on it's Intel for life.

I'd check to make sure it isn't the header itself. The only reason I say that is becaous I had an Asus A8N32 and the CPU fan header went out on it.

willynh, I used to have this mobo a long time ago. From the start I didn?t like the looks of this cheap fan. In fact my first thoughts were that this will eventually crap out on me either by the accumulation of dust or by the constant exposure to high temps. I?ve started looking for a replacement heatsink even before I got the board.

Finally, after looking at many heatsinks I ended up with the Swiftech MCX 159-CU. This is an excellent chipset heatsink and it will definitely fit on this mobo. The fan also is not your std 10mm cheapo but a 20mm one that will definitely last longer. I?ve also used the heatsink without the fan and had no heat issues. One look at it and you?ll understand that this is way better than the Zalman.

In Swiftech?s site there is a picture on the product page for the MCX 159-CU that shows it mounted on the A8N-SLI Deluxe. Nothing else to say there.

The only downside is that you cannot use a 2-slot VGA card but I think that you already know that. As clearly shown in the picture you?ll still be able to use a 2nd VGA for SLI if you want.

I hope this helps.

I've used a Zalman NB47J heatsink on my A8N-SLI Deluxe for more than 2 years without incident. I couldn't stand the whiny chipset fan when I bought the board, so I replaced it with the Zalman heatsink almost immediately.

Note that you'll need to remove the motherboard from the case to do the replacement. I just clipped the plastic retainer pins on the chipset fan. The Zalman heatsink comes with its own push-down pins.

[edit] Here's a photo of the heatsink installed on my board. The graphics card (an EVGA 7800GTX) just clears the heatsink. If you have a dual-slot card, you'll need to clip a couple of the fins to make it fit.
