Help a Wireless Nubie :)

First off, I'm not a networking expert. I've read several threads here about wireless, but I'm now quite baffled by terms and such.

Here's the deal - I have 2 Linksys WRT54G units. I have one of them already set up, with 2 PCs connected (wired), works fine. I want the second one to be set up as a client in another part of the house, and it's first connection will be to a PS2 (by ethernet).

I started here with user1234's "HOWTO: Use Linksys WRT54G as a wireless ethernet bridge" but got completely confused. For starters, do I need to first configure my second unit just as I did my first one to begin with (to get it set up), and then load the firmware update? If I set it up initially with a PC, can I expect the PS2 to connect to it ok (I assume so)? I gotta believe somebody else out there has done this.

If anyone can help simplify this for me without turning it into a 400 message diatribe of WEPs and WPAs I'd greatly appreciate it 🙂 I'd offer a case of beer for the help, but it'll probably be gone by the time we're done 🙂

for that application you may just wat to pick up a "workgroup bridge" from linksys.

works well.

I don't know if a linksys AP can serve as a workgroup bridge or not.

also - welcome to the forums. you'll find tons of knowledge and pros here.

You only need new firmware on the one you want to use as a client.

Sure.

I use a WRT54G as a client, but not with the alchemy firmware mentioned in that guide, I use OpenWRT.

The guide is pretty good, I can't really tell you what to do any better than that. Where exactly does it go wrong for you when you go through the guide?

I must be missing something. I downloaded the Sveasoft firmware upgrade zip file to my pc, unzipped it. When I try to do the firmware upgrade from the Linksys web interface I get "Upgrade failed". I can ping it fine though.

I tried another file of this upgrade with same results.

Linksys site wasn't much help. What am I missing?

You probably have the wrong file, make sure you get the right firmware for your specific version of the WRT.

I've tried several files, but all say "Upgrade failed". Is there a way to find out what upgrade file(s) will work with a V5 unit?

None, the "upgrade" firmware are based on the fact that WRT54g v1-v4 firmware is written in Linux.

WRT54g v5 is Not written in Linux, it is a private propriety firmware and there is No "upgrades".🙁

:sun:

Oh that sucks! Thanks for the info though, this is what I was afraid of.

Is it possible that the V5 is capable of client mode? Or am I just SOL?
