It sounds strange ... a non-gamer buying a PS3?

Well, I bought a 120GB version PS3 about 4 months ago to use as a media center to watch movies (love playing movies off of a thumbdrive) and BR DVDs (for she who must be obeyed). My son was also home on leave so he got to use it as well to play some demos ...

That being said ... I was bored the other day and downloaded a demo of Battlefield 1943 from the on-line store. I have played the PC version of BF 1942 and enjoyed it but that was years ago. I really enjoyed playing even though I suck at using the PS3 controller ... and I mean suck! I am used to a keyboard and mouse.

I have two stupid questions:

1 - Can I buy BF 1943 on disk or am I limited to buying it ($14.95) off the on-line store?

2 - Is there an alternative control for 'tards like me (like a keyboard/mouse) that I can buy to replace the PS3 controller?

I really had a great time playing on-line ... the first time in a long time and I'd like to experience that again.

Thanks all ...

1) Yes, you are limited to buying some games on the on-line store. These are typically smaller games anyways.

2) Yeah, there are options. Some games support the KB/M natively while others will require an adapter like the XFPS.

1. BF 1943 is a PSN/XBL exclusive so it's not on disc. Buying from the store is secure though.

2. Technically yes, realistically no. Both the 360 and PS3 have keyboard/mouse support but so far only Unreal Tournament 3 supports it.

Using the controller just takes some practice.

Welcome to gaming dud. :)

1) BF 1943 is available via download only.

2) A KB/Mouse combination does work on the PS3, but for it to work in games it needs to be supported by the game. In regards to BF1943 you might want to check google (I would but everything under the sun is blocked here at work).

1) dunno

2) yes, an easy way to do this is to buy a ps2 to ps3 adapter, and hook up a smartjoy frag which you use to hook up ps/2 style mouse (non-optical), keyboard

see video here. link

XIM, FragFX, XFPS Rateup, Max Shooter, Fragenstein...there are options, just depends how much you want to spend and how much control over the movement you want.

I have used Max Shooter, which is a clone of the Rateup, and in its default state it works well, but not so much when you try to do a custom config. I think I spent like $50 on it. I got the XIM, which was I think $80, and has much more control over all the behavior of the mouse, and allows custom profiles which you can change on the fly. It might have too many options, as getting it feel like a PC takes time. It worked great for MAG and MW, not so much for BFBC2. I'm sure there is something in the middle, but the one thing I learned is that game companies do a lot of crap to get games usable with a controller. Trying to undo it is a pain in the butt. Even if you have an older PC I would think it would be better to play on a PC if thats what you are used to.

Thank you all who replied to my post. I will probably end up buying the game even though I would prefer it on media. If my HD were to go bad ... am I screwed?

As for control in-game ... I guess I will have to practice more once I get the game. It seems like the only thing I am good for is running enemy troops over with vehicles!

Hey dud, once you purchase anything on the PSN store, your PSN ID will be able to download it any time, as many times as you want. It's under Download List or something I can't remember off the top of my head. This list even has all the demos you've downloaded listed here too.

Thanks Syborg for that info. I guess there's no risk then.

I've heard of download limits on PSN, but I have yet to run into them redownloading some things several times on multiple different machines too(my 'main' PS3 went from a 40GB, to a 80GB to a 250GB moving from the living room, to my bedroom and then to the kids as I upgraded). Your PSN account is like a Steam account.

Your ID can be registered on 5 PS3s. After that, you're done.

One more question ... once I buy the game does it cost anything to play on-line or does that right come with buying the game?

Thanks ...
