Hello I?m relatively new to overclocking and was just wondering a few things about how to overclock my CPU.

I?m currently running a P4 2.53 with b0 stepping @ 2.698 (19x142), default voltage of 1.5 and its running fairly cool (41degrees idle) using the stock HSF. I?m also using a ASUS P4PE with 512mb of corsairXMS 3200.

Now that that?s out of the way I'd like to know a safe way of taking it further, the last time I tried to overclock it I went a little overboard (about 2.9 gig straight off the bat) and it corrupted a windows file and I had to format. Things I?d like to know include, what a CPU like mine should be able to safely run with the above set up, also about voltage how much do you increase it and how often? How do you know when ur CPU has hit its limit? Do I need to touch the DRAM voltage settings? What?s a safe level of heat? Do prolonged periods of over clocking still cause damage to the CPU with modern chips? Any other advice or tips appreciated.

Thanks.

Set your memory to 1:1 and the memory timings on manual at 2.5/3/3/7 .Make sure AGP is locked at 66 and the PCI is at 33.If the overclock fails and you can't boot up shut off the PC and hold down the insert key on the keyboard and while holding the insert key power on the computer until it boots so you can get into the bios.I am not sure if this works on the Asus mobo.If it doesn't you will have to clear the CMOS through the jumper on the mobo or if the Asus has an overclocking feature in the bios to reset itself.Raise the vcore voltage (cpu voltage) when you raise the FSB and it doesn't boot into windows one step .025 and try again. If it doesn't go raise another .025 voltage. You can go up to 1.7V at idle no more than that cause its risky.Sometimes if I get a corrupted file I just reboot and seems fine, all depends.Just raise the vcore voltage .025 at a time when it won't boot into windows. From where you are now just raise the FSB 2-3 at a time.

If you do a search here in the forum how to overclock or whatever you should find some posts.

Just go upping the FSB one 1mhz at a time and check if the AGP/PCI is locked at 66/33

You should hit some more than 142 ;)

If you can't go much higher due to the b0 stepping, just change the memory ratio to get some more speed out of that memory
