first post on this forum so hi there!

first time im going to OC. originaly planned to read/learn about it when i bought my hardware but then school etc got in the way but now i plan to catch up!

now i tried copying the exact setup in http://www.anandtech.com/show/2427/ but the text fried by last few braincells it would seem since i didnt get enough of it to make it work. so the problem.

first of cpu-z detects my RAM as PC2-6400. i double checked on both the ram in the machine and on box it came in and its PC2-8500. this i dont get.

second whenever i mess with the RAM in the bios i always boot up without any screen signal. monitor doesnt detect any signal and just loop searches between analog digital and hdmi.

so can anyone help me solve this? also if anyone got a screenshot or pic of the final setup mentioned in the link then that would be great too

specs:

Asus Rampage Formula
Asus Geforce 480
Kingston KHX8500D2K2/4G
Intel core2 extreme QX9650
samsung syncmaster p2450
LG BH10LS30

got watercooling blocks on the GPU and CPU

i did indeed read that post but i couldnt find any info explaining the lack of screen image and why my RAM is detected as pc2-6400.

this could be me failing to read the post properly or just plain not understanding ofc

Use the same mb as a spare try fsb at 333.
mb never liked 400fsb
common performance not less then 09.

could you take a snapshot of the bios setup you mention?

also if anyone can answer why my RAM is detected as only pc2-6400 when i know its pc2-8500 that would be great

The MB might not be reading the SPD of the RAM correctly, many dont!...Set the RAM manually!

first of cpu-z detects my RAM as PC2-6400.

GPUz has two tabs for RAM, "Memory" and "SPD". Which one are you looking at?
The "Memory"tab shows the current set speed, whereas the "SPD" tab shows pre-programmed offical timings that the RAM is able to run. Either way, SolMiester's advice to use manual settings in BIOS is good.

in the "SPD" it says its only PC2-6400. also i tried setting the dram to 1066 as the manufacture says it can run. having only changed that setting i still get a startup where i get no screen image

Kingston says the RAM needs to be at 2.2-2.3V when running at full speed. 1.8 to 2.0V is basically the default, so make sure to manually st the RAM to 2.2 or 2.3V in the BIOS.

That is fine. Your RAM being detected as 6400 is not a big deal. If it truley said you got a blah blah Mhz then thats what you have.

What speed is your RAM running on right now ?

Lets try to OC you step by step , one thing at a time........

We need more info, please fill in your signature so we can better help you.

2.2-2.3v is burnout time, IMHO. That's pretty crappy RAM. I would just run it at DDR2-800 and 1.8-1.9v.

couldnt find the signature option anywhere so il write my specs as precise as i can here

spec:
Asus Rampage Formula
Intel QX9650 @ 3,0ghz
Asus Geforce 480
Kingston hyperx 2gb pc2-8500 x4
corsair HX1000w modular power supply
WD1500HLFS harddisk (the windows 7 64bit on)
2x 1,5TB 7200rpm regular harddisks for storage

thats the hardware. will the water cooling blocks, radiator etc be neccesary info?

^ With an Extreme-series processor (QX) you really shouldn't be worring about messing with memory timings. Just set it at the highest standard stable speed (6400 = 800 DDR), and use the unlocked multipliers to push that overclock. I guess from the water-cooling comment that airflow for HSF/case-cooling isn't an issue :)

I have Corsair Dominator ddr2 that ran fine @ 2.1v for almost 3 years until i retired it this past febuary and it's currently in My exs computer running just fine.

Still have 2 sticks of ballistic that needs to be rma to crucial.
This is the last of 2.2 volt 1066 stuff.
Since 2006 9 different rma on the 2.2 ram.
I run 2x2 gskill + 2x1 ballistic at 2.1 volts
Had 6 sticks of original 2.2v ram and non of them ever lasted longer then a year.

i think? i made a bit of progress. currently my RAM are set on 800mhz but when i put it up to 1066mhz my lcd poster tells me it get stuck on "det dram" what does this mean exactly? that its stuck due to the ram i can tell but why exactly does it get stuck? my RAM are rated for 1066

Memory is the most finicky component. I'd say your RAM just doesn't like to run at those speeds at those voltages with that motherboard.

Your not losing much by running at 800 anyway. Just keep it at 800, tweak the timings if you want or can, and overclock via the multiplier.
