Help a hardware newbie - Overclocking the 8250

Got and am currently setting up my Dell 8250 (with 512 RDRAM). Can someone direct me to a place that explains overclocking from literally how to deal with the heatsink? Basically, want to learn how to overclock the processor... without buying new equipment. Also would like to know how to increase performance of the RAM. If you got some time, help me out. Thanks.

You can't OC a Dell. There are no settings in the Dell BIOS that you can change that would allow you to OC. There is a software OCing app that I've pointed several people to here but, as far as I know nobody's been able to get it to work. There was a big "Dell tweaking" thread here at AT from a few weeks ago. Use the search (for "Dell") and see if there's anything in there that might help. I'm pretty sure there isn't.

the windows based software overclocking utlities only give you the settings that are already available in the bios.

in that case you are getting nowhere extremely fast

maybe you can flash teh bios with another "real" bios from the mobo manufacturers website
**do it at your own risk however, ive heard that dell only takes regular boards, takes teh bios and strips it, then reflashes with stripped bios**

OC'ing your Dell is sure to void the warranty if you do find a way. Keep that in mind. RDRAM is also not a good OC solution compared to DDR.

If you want to send it back or sell it off, I'm sure the excellent folks here would be happy to recommend a killer P4 OC setup. I'm guessing the list would go something like: Antec Plus1080AMG case and power supply, Asus P4PE motherboard, Pentium4 2.26GHz, Alpha PAL 8942 heatsink, YS Tech adjustable-rpm 80mm fan, and the all-important Corsair PC3500 memory. Plus a video card of your choice, of course.

You CANNOT overclock this. if you use a Dell, as good as they are, you are stuck with the stock speed. If you need to overclock, you need look elsewhere from Dell...you'll probably need to build your own.l
