I did a bit of research on my own and it looks like I need a DL DVD-R to make an exact copy of a movie dvd, is this right? What if I only have non-DL DVD-Rs...what's the best way to make an exact copy of the movie? I tried both Sonic and CDburn XP...and I just can't figure out how to do it.

:(

Depends, you may be able to rip out extras or audio that you won't use. But generally, yes.

DVD Shrink:
http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html

Get it here (RO mirror is faster):
http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Too...D-DVD-Rip-Other-Tools/DVD-Shrink.shtml

There will be a loss of quality, but just make sure you use the Deep Analysis and the adaptive error compression (default setting is good).
Also, the best way to keep quality is to either split it into two parts, or to cut out as much as possible (languages you don't need, special features, etc..)
Or, you can just go out and buy some DVD+R9's. I hate the DVD-R9's, not widely supported (at least on my burner) and I like to bitset.
And to me, nothing beats Verbatim (MKM media):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817130008
or DVD+R's (MCC media):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817507003

But the main point, is the DVD Shrink, Enjoy.

Actually the blank DVD that I have is 4.7GB 8X DVD+R. I assume since it' non-dl, I will have to settle for the loss of quality.

What's the difference between a regular DVD+R and DVD+R9? And how do I distinguish each?

DVD+R9 is a DVD+R DL (dual layer) and holds 8.5gb of stuff. There the same thing. Dual Layer (DL) and R9 (no idea what it means) are the same thing.
You'll be able to tell the difference since it should say right on the disk or the package.

With the DVD+R media, don't forget to bitset it when you burn it. That often improves compatibility with other drives/dvd players.

I just threw in the extra info. It's all "in my opinion" so take it with what ever you want, but I do like the Verbatim media.

And yea, it's non-dl (aka single layer)

How to biset? I have both Sonic and CDBurn XP software. Or if you have another recommended burning software, I would like to know that as well.

clonedvd
theres no way around a split unless the film itself is only 4482mb or less. theres no perfect way, only compromises without dual layer media. clonedvd can better handle this since it lets you pick and choose what to keep or split while retaining menu
