I have a American Lit test on friday and its gonna be 1 essay question and its worth 50% of our final grade...need to do well! So i thought i'd turn to you guys for help
He's gonna give us 6 questions and we have to pick one and write an essay on it. And we have to compare 2 different authors....
I have a feeling one of them will be self-reliance vs christianity...
Some of the authors we dead relating to this are Emerson, Poe, Melville, O'conner, Franklin, Edwards, Jefferson.....
I am really confused and need some clarification. Im having a hell of time trying to understand "Self-Reliance" by Emerson. So Emerson says God is in each person, but using self-reliance will bring you closer to Nature and to God?? Can someone please elaborate for me. Also, how does Emerson and Self-reliance go against the Christian Church (If at all)??
Ben Franklin's autobiography is another thing. He practices self-reliance to. But he is a Deist so that means God made everything in nature, including man, and everything must be perfect. So how does this compare to Emerson's views and the views of the Christian church?
Also has anyone read "Ligeia" by Poe or "Personal Narrative" By Edwards ?? Anyone know these tie into this topic?
THAnks in advance...YEs i know im a pain in the a$$.. I have no clue about religion and I have very bad reading comprehension.
