HELP!! 80's TV dramedy

It was a police detective w/ a really big gun.. a satire of like Magnum PI type shows. Was a comedy but no audience. The last episode he had to defuse a bomb and it exploded and the episode ended.

What was the name of the show? AND WHAT HAPPENED AFTER? My network would then restart the series the following day/week. I think maybe that was the season finale and it didn't get picked up the following season..
 
Was it starring John Ritter? If it was I sort of remember what you're talking about. TV Tome would be the place to look if you can remember the star's name.

Sledge Hammer, David Rasche, IMDB and Google would have more. Sort of a weak imitation of Police Squad! (which became the Naked Gun movies) IIRC.
