HELP! 3D Mark Freezes at the same spot!

I downloaded 3D Mark2001 tonight. I set it to run all of the standard benchmark tests. I tried to run it 3 times and each time it freezes at the same spot. It is on one of the game tests. "The Lobby" I see the guy spraying with his machine gun and a couple seconds into it it freezes and shuts down the program.

1.) Anybody know what would cause this?
1a.) If not, how do I find out what the problem is?

2.) Is there a better troubleshooter to find problems with my setup?

Here are my system stats. Thanks for any help!

MSI K7T 266 pro 2 mainboard w/ latest bios 3.3
AMD Athalon T-bird 1 ghz @ 1 ghz
512 mb PC2100 DDR
MSI Geforce 2 MX400 32mb
WD 60 gig 7200 rpm HD
SB live 5.1
Windows XP Pro
I believe I have all the latest drivers for the vid, sound, and chip set

I don't believe that a freeze up in 3DMark2001 indicates a problem with your system. It could be driver related. Anyway, If your games and other software run without a hitch, then you're ok. 3DMark2001 exploits a vid card's ability to run DirectX 8. Your Geforce2 MX 400 can't run all the DirectX8 optimizations and, IMHO, is the weak spot in your system. Upgrading to a GF3 Ti200 would be an inexpensive alternative that I think you would enjoy, and do justice to what looks like an overall nice rig. 🙂

Is there any particular manufacturer of that card that you would recommend?

MSI makes the one I have now, are they a good choice?

Is it better than the ATI Radeon (8500 I think)?

Thanks for the response.

Most makers of the GF3 Ti200 build their cards to nVidia reference spec, so any should do (MSI, PNY, VisionTek, Hercules, Gainward, Leadtek, Asus, etc.) Look for a price of $175 new, or search in the Anandtech FS/FT forum for a good deal from a good trader.

The Radeon 8500 is also a good card, look to pay about the same as the GF# Ti200, $175 new for an OEM version. The OEM version is clocked at 250/250 while the ATi retail version is clocked at 275/275 and runs about $210 new (best pricing at PriceWatch.com).

Either one will wow you.

Good Luck

😀
