Hi...I got a new 1.2ghz Tbird ran into window registry errors if pushed over 1.4ghz..so reboot and lower speed all is well..so took some advice and rearranged my pci cards...did not touch my cpu/hsf and ram....rebooted with software on at default speeds ...then o/c and sytem crashed and registry reset all the software..so I reinstalled w98 or attempted probably 6 times over the weekend.

Please note my temps on the cpu(Alpha PAL 6035 and Sunon fan) with 1.85 v never exceeded 58c when overclocked by bios temps. I generally ran for 2 days no crashes at 1.38 -1,4 ghz(10x 138 or 10x140)

Now when I would reinstall w98 and software(Via 4in 1 , Promise software,MS office, WinOncd, Norton, plextor manager, zonealarm and V5 3dfx tools, sb live software, nic software, windows media player) I left cpu at default settings 1.75, 12x100

This on a Asus A7V133 with bios 1.002A...default settings except disabled onboard audio...

Last three W98 install at 1200 and after loading W98 and varying amounts of software I would get a crash and registry checker would replace registry with earlier one ..like one I first installed the videocard software or I even would crash and lose explorer and could not even boot into safe mode..this occurred once after install HP930c software, and twice while installing MS office ...

At one point I had reinstall with cdreqs to ge tback to better starting point, then reinstalled stuff and crash and lose W98.

So last time ...I cleared cmos with shorting the soder points and removed all the pci cards and started the process all over again..

Bare bones..1,2ghz cpu and 2 128mg stick of Mosel rev 2 pc143 ram..cdrom and Maxtor HD...put in V5 and installed W98

then installed Via 4 in 1, then Direct x 8(final) then Promise ATA100 drivers then V5 drivers, then sb live then 3com nic..this with Maxtor HD on primary ide controller and cdrom...then I moved the Maxtor to Promise ATA100 on iDE3...CDROM to IDE1 and CDRW to ide 2...after putting alot software on..system seemed stable..loaded MS office 2000 PRO..reboot and ran Outlook to configure..locked up and I close and shut down..got windows registry error and rebooted..got in W98 reset desktop and some not working...got window registry error..rebooted and lost explorer....all this and TBIRD at 1200(12x100)....

Is the cpu not working....it ran fine for 2-3 days o/c with a few crashes in 3d screensaver...but W98 rock stable even played 45min to 1 hr of NOLF without a crash at 10x140 and temps never got higher than 58c

I did find my Mosel ram rev 2 that is supposed to got to at least 150fsb cas222..one stick is ok..other when at cas2 above 144...will not show in bios...ok to cas333 at 146...i tried various multipliers and fsb if I went over 1400 not very stable 1380 perfect...1390-1400 good over 1400 bad

I know this is a long post but I give up...after 6+ tries at getting this system up and stable with the desired software at 1200 and crashing...I am at a loss..going to call the local shop tomorrow where I got the cpu....

Any advice..I know the cpu is not fried beacuse it boots and run and temp are at 53-54c in bios at 1200...but it does not seem to run stable at this speed even

I just tried out an A7V133, and personally did not like it. I have a T-Bird 1200 that runs well at 1400 on an ABIT KT7AR, and an IWill KA266-R. I had a difficult time reaching 1400 on the ASUS, and also ran into having to try and short the CMOS solder points, (poor design, should have a jumper) but that did not work, so I used the dips to lower the multiplier to get it to boot again.

I like to try out boards, and the A7V133 is now not among my favorites. I don't like the BIOS setup there was NO thermal grease under the Northbridge HSF at all. IMHO the ABIT KT7AR is a better board, with the IWill KA266-R DDR mobo very good also. I have a difficult decision on which one to keep as my primary system. I am running the IWill now, and it is a very stable, fast mobo with the PC1600 DDR RAM, which I thought was priced well at under $100.00 for a 256MB stick at Crucial. It has no problems running at 140MHz at the low DDR default voltage. Crucial should be getting some PC2100 in soon, and it should have no problem getting to 150 if it is anything like the PC1600 quality.

Sorry, I could not be of more help, I kind of gave up on the ASUS also. I did get decent performance after I flashed the BIOS to the latest version that increases memory performance, but it still was lacking the performance that I am after.

I got similar problems when installing win98 on my t-bird 900 with the 8KTA3 motherboard.

Everything worked until the 3rd reboot and then I got boot errors (registry problems, missing dll's)

just gave up on win98 and stayed with win2k.
