although i haven't been wearing them recently because I'm lazy, you're supposed to wear them all the time. Even with a quiet helmet. Wind noise can cause you to lose your hearing. at least that's what I've read.

for me, anything above 40mph is uncomfortable. not sure what the correlation of wind speed versus wind noise is, but it absolutely will cause hearing loss over long periods of time.
