Helmet cam setups

Just started to look into this.

Would like to see other peoples setups and reviews on what works and doesn't.

I'm looking at budget setups for my motorcycle helmet to be ridden on the streets.

Go pro seems bulky as all hell. Other ones I have a hard time believing it would stay mounted at 70mph+ . I guess I could also look into handle bar mounted cams a well.

What I don't like about the gopro is their proprietary mounting system that they have. But I don't know 100% for sure if they can use the standard 1/4"20 screw type mount..

I run a contour roam 2, and love it since you can attach it in multiple angles and still record.

I think they're standard but don't quote me on it. I do hate that waterproof case though. You need it to mount to a tripod or object, but you can't connect HDMI to it if it's in there. No good for live broadcast. Would use it more for ice level shots shooting hockey if I didn't have to duct tape it.

As with any helmet camera I've seen, wind noise is brutal on the interstate.

I've been messaging people on YouTube who do those vlog. They seem to be decent enough to listen to.

Or even that rang rover video NYC video. I say its about as decent as I will ever need.

Nope, I never used them on a motorcycle or on the interstate.

The newer ones do a pretty good job of reducing wind noise for the video. I've used mine on the freeway with a handlebar mount at speeds up to 100mph.

The GoPro really does take some nice videos.

Never mounted it on my helmet though. I would imagine it would create a noticeable amount of drag having a big square box attached to the top of your helmet. Chest mount might be a better option.

I have the Contour HD. They're out of business now, but I liked it and never had any problems with it. I almost pulled the trigger on upgrading to a Hero 3 Black but read about all the battery life and firmware problems.

Had to turn the mic way down to combat the wind noise. I was skeptical that it could stay mounted to anything at 120+ but it's never flown off. I've mounted it to body panels, glass, plastic, helmet, etc... I don't have a bike though.

WUT! Contour is out of business? 🙁

I bought mine from Cycle Gear and the guy said it's a great camera but don't upgrade the firmware or you'll have all sorts of problems. I haven't had any issues with mine.

These chest mounts look interesting seems more secure then a helmet cam.

Anyone have shots of their cams mounted ?

I think I saw fexigoon video here before, guy who has that fz6 that upgraded. His videos looks decent.

But if you have a chest cam you really have no way of controlling where you're shooting. Helmet mounting seems superior. The camera should see what the rider sees.

are you using it to vlog or as a dashcam? a lot of the action cams have bad microphone setups, which are not as good for vlogging.

counter roam is good for helmet mounting but I don't think it has video looping, which would not be as good for a dash cam.

That is a very good point!!! Back to helmet cams and trying to figure how to mount them.

Mainly dashcam. Maybe I'll try vlog.

Check out the Liquid Image goggles - the 720p version can be found for around $120 and the 1080p for around $220.
I initially looked at the Go Pro but passed on them, then had an owner of the LI goggles show off the videos his setup was capable of. The POV is perfect, unlike the Go Pro which is either aside or above eye level for viewing.

Liquid image looks great. Sadly... It might not work for me. I wear glasses and a full face helmet, wearing goggles like that might be an issue. I'll give it a shot tho if there is someone local selling.

you didn't give a budget, but contour roam2 is on sale at the clymb for $140.
http://www.theclymb.com/search?q=contour. don't forget no video looping iirc, which is a con if you want to use it as a dash cam.

monoprice makes a a budget action cam http://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=10159. I think they don't have the wide angle lense that most do though.

sony action cam is a popular one also http://www.amazon.com/Action-Video-C.../dp/B0090EC5MS. Might be harder to find mounts.

there's a couple others that I cant remember off the top of my head.

I've been lusting for a GoPro of some kind. Too bad I don't do anything exciting. Well I guess I could have done back surgery cam. Of course I think the helmet cam would have been aimed the wrong way and there was stuff going on back there you didn't want to see anyway.

Be cool to mount one on a radio controlled helicopter. Lots of folks doing it.

one thing to keep in mind if you use an action cam is the footage is usually not going to be very exciting to watch unless you do some editing. Obviously if you're just using it to record your laps at the track it might be perfect without any edits.

Budget would be sub $250. I really wanna stay under $150 as I don't know if I wanna keep doing it. Its just a feeler.
