hellpp...computer not powering on

this is my first build and im a uber n00b so i installed everything and on the back of the power supply, theres the O/I button (O being off i presume and I being on). When i set it to I (on) theres an extremely high pitched noise coming from something in the computer(i really cant tell....) and nothing lights up/turns on when i press the power button. No clue on whats goin on.....please help!

| is indeed the on for just the power supply. Some power supplies have the switches, some do not. List your system specs please and be as detailed as possible. Sometimes building a ssytem outside of the case is the best route for the first boot just to make sure everything is going to work correctly.

How long does the high pitched noise continue for? Does it make the noise when you just have the power supply hooked up to power and not hooked up to any components such as drives and the motherboard? I would not even plug that power supply into your $$ setup. You need to use a quality 350w or larger power supply such as antec, enermax, etc. I would rather have a 250w antec than some 550w generic thing.

the high pitched noise is a constant whine. My friend built a similar system and his was fine so im guessing the psu is enough.

This may sound like a daft question but you did hook up the 6800Ultra to the PSU?

yeah i saw that topic before......and yes the 6800 is hooked up. But shouldn't my motherboard at least light up when its plugged into the psu even though no videocards/hard drives are connected? It doesnt even do that....just a constant high pitched whine (its a bit faint but u can hear it pretty well). Also whenever u turn off the system power in the back the whine slowly dies down in like 3-4 seconds.

If i was you i would strip everything our of the case that you dont need to get the machine started and your OS installed.
amdskip makes a good point about building outside of the case just to prove the system.
It does sound like a PSU problem and a good quality one will be required bearing in mind the 6800U for example will suck a lot of juice and boot up is when the consumption will be at its highest.

If you do decide to try another PSU go for something with 3 dedicated rails for the 3.3v 5v and 12v supply and get one by a decent manafacturer as suggested above.

Sorry it's not much help but without being able to look these are always difficult ones to decipher.

Do you really want to trust a $10 power supply to $600+ in equipment? I would hope not. Just take my advice and do a search about power supplies. 550w generic power supplies suck no matter what bling bling case they came in and "it worked for so and so".

Unhook all unessential parts not needed for booting. Have just your videocard, cpu and memory installed nothing else. Make sure you have the power reset case connectors right. Make sure the motherboard isn't shorting out in the case.
