Welcome to the boards. You must have missed the Thread that is stickied at the top of this forum entitled overclocking guide. Changing the memory speed is not necessarily always required for overclocking a CPU. It is dependant on the CPU and motherboard and in many cases a personal preference. A cpus clock speed has traditionally been set by an internal multiplier setting and Front side bus frequency. For example an Athlon XP 3200+ runs at an actual clock speed of 2200 Mhz using a 200mhz Fsb. Since an Athlon XP 3200+ uses a multiplier setting of 11 the clock speed becomes 11x200Mhz=2200Mhz. In the past Overclocking was as simple as increasing the multiplier value to increase clock speed but then CPU manufacturers began locking the multipliers on their chips to prevent this. After that it became necessary to increase the clock speed by increasing the FSB which is typically the clock speed that memory runs at. It is possible in many cases to run the memory and FSB at different speeds with Cpus like the Athlon XP now but there is usually a significant performance sacrifice when doing so that in some cases negates many of the gains from overclocking the cpu. In other cases such as with the pentium 4 and the Athlon 64s running the Memory asynchronously from the FSB has little or no negative impact on performance or not enough to significantly impact the performance increase gained from a cpu overclock. Read through the guide stickied at the top of this topic and that should get you a reasonable understanding of the process and also some of the pitfalls to beware of. If you have anymore questions about specific deatails after reading the guide just pop just post em here in the thread you have already started with maybe a an edit to the thread title describing the new questions and i am sure myself or someone else will be happy to try and answer it for you.

Also, overclocking is not for the faint of heart. There are many things to consider, reconsider, and be careful with.

Firstly, you have to have parts that are known to overclock well. Whether or not you will spend less money and go with an athlonXP system, or spend more for an Athlon64 system; or you decide to go intel, you have to purchase the correct motherboard, ram, and appropriate cooling.

Do read the sticky'ed thread at the top on overclocking! After that, if you have more specific questions on CPU, mobo, ram, cooling choices, we will be more than happy to help ya out.
