Well, I tried this in the OT forum first, and quickly learned that was a bad idea, so a was kindly directed here for a second shot...here goes:
Good morning/evening/afternoon/night everyone, i just joined the forums today and i'm looking foreward to spending time here learning as much as i can about as much as a can...if that makes sence...anyway, i'm 16, a sophomore in HS. Before everone passes me off as a n00b (=P) i should say i have a good bit of experience building computers, and i spend most of my free time either reading PCMag/MaximumPC/CPUMag and browsing tech forums and tech sites, so hope i can at least throw a word or two into in-depth discussions. I'm a pretty avid gamer, but not playing anything at the moment. I'm impaciently awaiting EQ2, so my interest in general PC technology has sprung up once again.

anyone who saw my other post...resist the urge to rip me limb from limb.

Hi!

I'm sure you'll find that the guys around here are pretty nice, especially compared to the asshats in OT, but don't let them in on the secret, they keep away from us, we don't complain.

I guess that if you're pretty into computers you have a reasonable one? Why not take a look around, read some information on the Distributed Computing projects we run here, and sign up for one/a few of them, and try them out :) If you ever have any problems with them, either technical/scientific questions, or general questions, feel free to ask :)

I for one hope you make yourself well known (for good reasons, of course) and participate, as I said, there's a lot of good people here :)

Thanks. I'll look into them...what types of projects go on here? I'd like to get involved, if i can be of help. Funny you should mention me having a reasonable computer. At the moment, i have a complete pile of trash. this shouldn't be aloud into the public, but its a P3 866/512meg pc133 ddr/radeon 9200 128meg. to say the least i'm not proud of that. to say more, and to sound pitiful, i'm at Newegg about everyday putting parts into a cart for systems i could build. i'm saving up at the moment, and with my summer job, will be building a new rig in the fall. the prices will change alot by then, but to give you an idea for if i built it now, it would be..hmmm...Abit NF7-S mobo, Athlon XP-M 2500+ OC'd to 2.5Ghz, 10k WD Raptor SATA 60Gb, blah blah...that belongs in the hardware/proc forums.
Yes, i hope a can become known around here, but even if i'm not, i really just want to learn from people who i know are ALOT more knowledgable then me on this stuff :D

Welcome! Make sure not to get into any arguing threads in OT because those people can be pretty mean. Everythig else is cool here, and some of the OT threads are good too because people can answer some of your questions and respond to your comments. The tech support forum is pretty slow responding, but everything else here you should be able to find fun. Welcome!

Welcome! THIS THREAD lists most, if not all, of the projects that TA (Team Anandtech) has a presence in. Generally people choose projects that appeal to them for one reason or another (personal experience with cancer, love for numbers, pretty colours... whatever ;)) or just STATS :p Some of the project clients are optimized to particular cpu/OS combinations so that could be a consideration for you also. Beware... if you get bitten by the DC bug, you will quickly become well-known in the FS/FT forum also and will not have to rely on oil/gas heating in the winter due to the 17 CPUs running in your bedroom... ;)

Welcome to the DC forum Hyperlite. Hope you will take up one of the projects.

I expect you will find you have stumbled onto one of the best groups of people on the net.

P3's are OK.

I have a P3 733 as a file server, a P3 500, and a dual P3 450, all doing Seti@Home ............... you just need a lot of them.............. :p :p

Hyperlite, Welcome to AnandTech forums! :)

AnandTech.com has lots of good reviews & articles and links to good reviews.

This DC forum is very polite. We don't want to scare away or offend any potential or current TeAm mates. A lot of members working medical cure projects know someone with that disease, so we are sensitive about feelings and differing outlooks on life.

FYI: There is a Rally TeAm that moves from project to project as they need help to keep their ranking or get back a lost position.

Genome@Home is no more, it's just Folding@Home now.

Enjoy yourself learning! :)

That's why I told him to come here. It's good to have a warm welcome and DC is one of the best places for that. :)

And for all the people who were talking in my other thread about directing OT trash here. This is the kind of thing that I am and will be redirecting.
