Hi all.
I recently figured it was time to upgrade my computer when my celeron2@600hz cpu burned out (smoke)..so it was time.
The slotket had burnmarks on the "upside"..cpu obviuosly on the side facing the slotket, the top of the core on the cpu (or is that the "real" bottomn?) had a black liquid "leaking" out of it.

Today i recieved a new mobo, the MSI K7T266Pro2-RU (2) and a AthlonXP 1700+ CPU.
I also recieved a HSF that they promised me would fit the cpu.
Now..I still havent recieved my 256MB DDR SDRAM PC2100 184pins Micron 266Mhz, Micron Original non ECC ram (which will fit this mobo i hope?) yet, so i cant get it up and running anyways.

When the ram arrives..I will have to use the old psu in this setup, is there a big chance it could fry my new cpu aswell.
Let me try explain :
I cannot see any marks or whatnot from the main powercord coming from the psu -> mobo.
Actually i cant see any "marks" anywhere on the mobo).
The psu still gives power for sure,I tried it with a 166hz P1(same mobo)..but i could not get a picture on my monitor, but figured I didnt have the CPU power to juice my Geforce2 GTS, is this correct ?
Anyways, any advice about this would be greatly appreciated..Im not able to buy a new psu until next month prob. , but if there is a fair chance it could fry my new cpu, I will wait.

Now to the hsf on the cpu part.
Are you supposed to use LOTS of force to connect the hsf to the psu ?
I studied the procedure on how to mount the thing shown in the pdf file from amd.com first, and everything seemed correct..except i feel I need to use WAY to much pressure. I gave it a try a couple hours ago..but desided to stop because i was afraid of breaking the core.
After almost getting both "clip locks" connected to the mobo (I was about 3mm short), i desided to stop, I removed the hsf, and the
"goop pad" (sorry, dont know the name) on the hsf had a big "mark" showing the square core..well printed in it.
It really felt like i was pushing the cpu inside the mobo =\

Here is the hsf they sent me (which im trying to install) :

Anyone know if this hsf infact WILL or WILL NOT fit my cpu like the tech guy at the store told me ?

-- The end --

Sorry for this long and badly spelled post, hopefully some of you managed to make some sense out if it..and hopefully will post some information.

Thanx for reading =)

You need to sit down, read the manual, study the board and everything before you jump in. Make sure you have a good understanding beforehand.

What are the specs on the PSU? I would recommend waiting for a new one.

The clip on the heatskink can be tricky. Yes, they take a bit of force and care as to not damage anything. Just make sure you have it lined up right, clip the one side, gently rest the sink on the cpu, and apply even pressure on the clip. You may need a helping hand or something to flip out the clip end to get it over the socket tab.

Plugging all the parts together is the easy part IMO. Working out incompatibilites, driver bugs, and OS issues can be a little harder; definitely more time consuming.

Do a search for computer building guides (newbie guides) on the web, there are quite a few good ones. Tom's, overclockers, and sharky's all have them I do believe, to name a few.

Good luck. Enjoy your new system when it's going.

Hi !

The specs on the AOpen psu is :
Output : 300w
+3.3v (purp)
+5v (blue)
+12v (brown)

------------------------------------------------

10 min's ago..I installed the CPU and HSF sucessfully (it seems).
I powered the system and checked the D-Bracked, It showed failure on the memory test which is not that odd, considering I have no ram,but it passed the first test, which checks if my cpu is working.

I didnt get any picture on the monitor this time eather though, but it is my understanding that this is caused by not having any ram inserted.
God I hope my Geforce2 aint toats =(

Only had the computer running for about 2 minutes..the beep'ing sounds got annoying =P,
but so far so good I guess =p

My best advice to you would be to leave it alone until you have all the right parts to make it work... Read you manuals... get on the net and read, read , read. You have time on your side by the sounds of it... so use that time to learn. Your in a good spot right now on this forum to get info. go into oter areas of this forum and read the questions and answers that everyone else posts. But most importantly.... MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND IT!!!!

And and secondly.... HAVE FUN!!!!!!

The 300W sounds ok, as long as you make sure it is not defective (it shouldn't be. I am not sure why your Celeron burnt out though)

As for the heatsink, yes you do need to use some force. Use a screw driver to push the clip down and it shouldn't be a hard task. :)

Thanx for the posts all =)

Exactly how do I make sure my psu aint defective, come to think of it..right before my celeron got smoked, I turned the pc ON, didnt get a video picture then turned it off. I removed, then re-inserted the slotket adapter to make sure the ket/cpu was 100% connected...and here is what happened :
I turned the machine back on...no video...some seconds later,smoke! =(

Im really getting cold feets now..maby it would better to let it be until I can buy a new psu ?
Or is there a 100% working way of telling wether the psu is working 100% or not.

Thanx again.
