After my last HTPC build I was mulling over the idea of a network fileserver with a few terabytes of space to store all of my goodies along with an upgrade to a gigabit backbone.

I broached the subject with the wife since this could potentially cost a few more bucks than usual, and she replied with "how many computers do you need"?

Me: We don't have that many computers
She: Oh really?
Me: Yeah
She: Your laptop, my laptop, the net book you just bought for traveling, your "main" computer, and that thing sitting beside the TV you made...
Me: pause... but with this computer I could access...
She: You have enough computers!

Me: What's for dinner?

So I'm at five computers in house right now, too much? How many do yous have?

I have 6 that I use.

I probably have about 10 or 12 if I count ones that aren't actually in use ATM.

I do have a single bay NAS that has a 1TB HDD in it though.

I REALLY want to get a RAID 5 capable NAS with 4 2TB drives in it but that'd cost about $1,200 and the wife would shit a brick if I even asked.

The trick is to get it part by part, one hard drive here and one there until you get everything you need ;)

she's getting wise to what the boxes labled "Newegg.com" mean. Luckily I had an Amazon Prime membership for a few months so she thought I was buying books for a while :D

Just 2. Apartment life does not usually grant enough room for more than a desktop and a laptop.

I have had that same discussion with my wife many times over the years, but thankfully she always comes around (or I just do it anyways).

Right now we have:
- 4 laptops (1 company IBM laptop, macbook pro for my personal, macbook pro for wife, and macbook for my 4 y/o son).
- 5 desktops (that we turn on), and another 4 in the basement that sit in a pile I don't use anymore.
- 1 server that is basically just for backups and file storage
- 2 blackberry storm's and a iphone (technically these are mini-computers).

I've been lucky to downsize to just 2 computers. One is my main rig, the other is my laptop which also doubles as a HTPC- it accesses my main pc for my movies when i want to play stuff on the TV. this is not including my work laptop that i bring home whe ni ahve to work. I used to have a dedicated HTPC and another just lying around but i managed to part them out. my philosophy is "less is more".

9 running, but I have enough parts to make 2 more (s754, p3):

Work PC, Gaming PC, Music & dev server, HTPC, retro/old gaming PCs I haven't given away yet (pentium3, p133, 486)
2 Macs for software testing (intel mini & G4 book)

... I really need to set up DosBox and a Win98 VM and get rid of the old stuff.

Similar story here..

my old HTPC is now my file server and my PS3 now takes over the media playing.

Oh sure, try and pin it on the blameless season of flowers and renewal. :p

I hear Summer puts your brain on vacation, Fall trips you up big time, and Winter positively snows you under. ;)

the family computer and the file server. Dont need anymore. Dont want anymore. (though I will be building a small HTPC but under $200 and its sole purpose will be playback to the TV).

One. I rarely see a need for more than one. My wife lets me spend as much as I want on the one. We're due for a new one in the next year so I'll be asking stupid questions on the tech forum like "what's a quadcorder and is it better than tri-corder?" since the current desktop is four years old and I'm sure something new has come along since the last time I shopped. This time I'm really going to try for something quiet. Last time around we balked at the price of water cooling and ended up with a five fan behemoth. I only want one computer as they take up space.
