Hello ‘Want to upgrade my Acer One D255’ netbook owners.
There has been a lot of discussion and controversy (Acer remain mysteriously silent on this one) on the chat forums over whether RAM upgrade can be installed on the new model. From 1GB to 2GB with only one slot available. Well, I’ve just done it on my D255 2DQkk model. Wasn’t easy, took a LOT of research and one has to be VERY careful over some installations and disassembly, as not all the instructions on the net apply to this model. The design is slightly different to the very similar advertised models. On my model I had to take the keyboard out, release some important 4 door latch screws, before allowing the under trap door to be pried open.
But it works and my net book accepted it straight away. Had to do some resetting after tho to make it take full effect. All up took about an hour.
It had in it: Kingston 1GB 1 Rx8 PC2 6400S 666-12-B2. Now it has in it 2GB 200 Pin SO DIMM DDR2 PC2-5300 667MHz from good old Mr Memory. 30 Euros. Arrived in Ireland in only 4 days.
I’m in agreement with some of the other comments made, especially in that, true it does make things; processes, opening and closing of various programs, graphics etc, a little faster, but not as fast as doubling the already (at least stated for a netbook) healthy RAM should do.
But on 1 GB it was just Tooooo sloooww…
My suspicion is that it’s the N450 processor that’s slowing it down, along with the painfully slow & rather frustratingly structured Windows starter 7, and Office 2010 starter, both of which take ages.
The performance indicators show that the computers efficiency only increased a little.

What I’d like to do now, is get rid of the slow & frustratingly structured Windows Starter 7, and Office 2010 Starter, and install some other software more suitable, but I hear its risky as the drivers may not match? Has anybody tried it? XP? Downloadable?
And I’d like to install say, Word 2003 or 2007 instead of the lazy Word 2010 starter on it now. But there is no disc drive. Has anybody had success with these concepts? Thanks.

Yes- KerryJ First uninstall all uneccessary software like word 2010 starter and the pre-installed Anti-Virus. You can run decrapifier for windows as well to uncover more useless stuff. Then load a good registry cleaner like Reg Mechanic and clean the registry (after creating a restore point). It will help your speed . I have a d255e 13639 acer aspire one and after I did the above I stopped thinking about memory upgrades and op sys upgrades. It works well. Then, of course, you must load some anti virus I am using Microsoft Security Essentials. It is not bogging down the netbook and it is free and works well.

newbie mike ---oh also I loaded PowerDVD and hooked up a USB DVD player (requires two USB ports)and it's showtime!!! This thing is a lot of fun.

I have an N450 and it boots up fairly fast with 2GB RAM and a 320GB HDD. I would bet money it is the HDD if you're suffering with boot times over 40 seconds.

EDIT: Get a USB/ Wireless DVD drive to install other programs, or order them online from microsoft to get a digital copy.
