a 1.4l turbo producing a mere 148hp won't be fun to drive. the power produced at lower rpms (normal driving on local streets and on highway) will be very poor. and when you do rev up that engine to engage the turbo, power maximizes at a mere 148hp but that, in turn, kills all gas efficiency, resulting in LESS THAN the states 40+mpg.

People have fun in 90hp civics with even less torque.

performance suckage or not, I still look forward to this car. The Civic is just too pricey for what it is, and it can use some competition

Those people have no idea what fun actually is then.

The interesting thing, reading the details, is that the 1.4L 148HP Turbo is the OPTIONAL motor. The standard motor is a NA 1.8L with ~140hp. So let me get this straight, I can pay EXTRA on a $15k econobox (unknown price difference for now, but it goes to $21k for the top model apparently) for EIGHT horsepower? What?

Here's an idea, have the ~140hp 1.8L as the cheap motor, make a stripped version for $12.9k, and keep the same 1.8L motor, add a turbo for the next-up model.

They haven't even announced pricing. The 15k-21k was an estimate. It might start lower with a stripped version. They could also do like Honda does and sell it well equipped from the start.

Personally, I prefer Honda's approach. They offer few options once you choose the trim level. I think it's stupid to strip basic features so that you can say you have the lowest starting price.

Well with the economy in the crapper, it makes sense to offer vehicles along a broad price range, to better serve the widest range of consumers possible. An extreme example is how the Focus is set in the UK. You can buy 1.4L stripped cheapies for about 1/3 the cost of the range-topping fully-equipped 2.5L Turbo RS model.

I see nothing wrong with having a model with rollup windows, a radio/cd/ac, manual gearbox, for $12-$13k, and going all the way up to the turbo model with 6spd auto, power everything, etc, for $21k. Cover their bases pretty well that way. Lord knows the Aveo needs to be either upgraded or killed, it is an embarrassment to GM's resurgence in quality.

It would be nice if they dumped the Aveo and brought over the Agila or Corsa. They're much better cars than the Aveo. The Corsa is a great looking car. The Agila is more cutesy though once you see a profile shot of it.
