I told my 7 yr old, i'd get her a cell phone for her birthday.

my 10 yr old currently has one. but i'm thinking about getting him a new one at the same time.

was just wondering, Helio for my kids, are they too young?

both of them want MP3 players etc, the helio would be serve both purposes.

any thoughts?

Helio is going bankrupt. Not to metion that, but they use the lousy Sprint PCS network. Isn't the monthly rate like $40+ each? Wouldn't you be better off with a family plan on Cingular/Verizon?

well if they are going bankrupt then, there wouldn't be much point would there.

I have 7 & 10 year old kids too, and there is no way in hell I'd get them cell phones (or mp3 players either, for that matter), so I have no suggestions for you.

me too, but I guess it depends on the situation, only if I really needed to get in touch with them on a regular basis, but I could see them abusing it easily, you can teach your kids right and wrong all day long, the will take most of your advice, but in the end they are still just kids

Yes.
1. I wouldn't buy a second child the same thing I got as a present for the birthday child.
2. I wouldn't buy a 7 or a 10 year old a plain cell phone let alone an mp3, etc. one.

I don't pretend to be able to judge a person's parenting based on any single decision.

If you've decided your kids should have cell phones and you think it'll be fine, I have to trust you know them and your own ability to oversee it better than I or anyone else can.

I hope they enjoy their presents :) I'm sure they will.

Where did you hear that? If they are going bankrupt why are they coming out with a slew of new phones and other stuff this year?

My theory is that my kids will be with adults I trust at all times (when it's not teachers at school or in an after school program, it's almost always me or my spouse), who I can contact if I need to, who know how to contact me, so there is no reason for my kids to pack around an electrical umbilicus. I also figure they need to have better things to do than jabber on the phone, like paying attention to what they're doing or playing or reading, but that's just me, and my kids. The OP is free to raise his kids as he sees fit. :)

I'll stop posting now, as I really don't have any helpful suggestions for PlatinumGold (other than bumping his thread for him.)
