To preface, I'll admit I'm an Indiana University alumnus, so I'm somewhat biased. However when you look at these statistics, there is only one logical choice for the 2001 Heisman Trophy:
1) Rushed for more yards (3895) than any other quarterback in NCAA Division I-A history.
2) First player in Division 1-A history to record 2500 total yards in four consecutive seasons
3) First player in Division 1-A history to both pass and run for 40 touchdowns
4) First player in Division 1-A history to pass for 6000 yards and rush for 3000 yards. To put this in perspective, only one other Division 1-A player had ever done 5000/2000, and only 8 other players had hit the 4000/2000 mark.
5) 5th all-time in total yardage in NCAA Division 1-A history.
Granted, IU has had a sh!tty team for the past four years. That's even more of a reason to vote for him. The fact that he was able to reach those numbers in one of the toughest conferences in the country (Big 10) with the lack of support around him (linemen, receivers) speaks for itself. Even Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in Division 1-A history, said Randle El was the greatest athlete he's ever seen.
Sad, sad day.
