I must say I've been drinking this more often now, and I'm pretty impressed. Let me start by saying I don't like Heineken. Nothing wrong with bitter beer, AS LONG AS ITS MALTY!!! The only non-malty bitter flavor beer I can stomach is IPA, and I think its because the extra hoppiness gives it "character". That character doesn't come through in a pilsner like Heineken. The most I could stomach was Amstel Light, which as Light beers go was probably my favorite.
And then HPL (Heineken Light) came along. I tried it at a local bar for the first time a month ago during some sort of launch promotion. Guess what...THAT SKUNKY HEINEKEN TASTE IS GONE!! It really does go down pretty "smooth" (what the ads keeps saying) but it has more flavor than a Bud Lite or Miller Lite. And I can't be sure about this, but I think it has less carbonation than typical beers--so its not the same smoothness as a Guinness, but it goes down easy!
Now I saw that other thread about HPL being a "bitch drink"...I don't think it is. The bitches can stick to their Smirnoff Ice, Mich Ultra or whatever the fvck they're drinking these days. This beer has more flavor. I guess if you're the type of guy who likes vodka tonics at a club, this is a good alternative (but only after the liquor, not before!!!
) Of course, I can't say I like their TV ads with the bottle all decked out in rhynestones and glitter. They need to stop doing that before they get labeled as the next Zima!
