Suck on it Steve!!! :D

It's hard to pin down the number of people that use alternative operating systems such as the Mac OS or Linux, but this week Apple CEO Steve Jobs admitted that the number of users upgrading to Mac OS X, his company's UNIX-based modern OS offering, is pretty disappointing. In an interview with C|NET, Jobs said that only 1 to 2 million people were actively using Mac OS X, though the company hoped to see 5 million active OS X users by the end of the year. Particularly damaging is news that at least half of the users that received new Mac systems so far this year--on which OS X was preinstalled as the default OS--switched back to the old OS 9 system upon getting their systems. But the biggest problem, of course, is that OS X will do nothing to raise Apple's market share, an increasingly frightening situation for a company grappling with

Well the source of the info doesn't seem very credible, though. :)

OS X looks pretty but I doubt that I will be as productive as I am with Windows.

As far as I know, WinInfo is a VERY credible site...

Bah, Macs are ok, I'd even like it if they were a bit larger it would keep MS on there watch. But I can't stand Steve "Jesus" Jobs how thinks he can save the world with his Macs.

ive heard of that (people downgrading to os9), but i cant seem to figure why. Ive had osx for some time and i loved it, os9 looks like the retarted cousin in comparison.

NFS4, you, like so many members of these Forums, are just a Macintosh hater, and I must say...

While I haven't used it myself, my roommate does support for Adobe products (PhotoShop, LiveMotion, Premiere, AfterEffects, etc.). He has a 2K Pro machine & a dual boot OSX/OS 9.something machine side by side. He's been VERY impressed with OSX.

His only complaint has been the speed of the UI.

Just because something isn't popular doesn't mean it isn't good.

My brother is a graphic designer / web designer and mac person since pre-PowerPC days. He was waiting for OS X to stabilize and for more apps to be re-written for it. He says he's finally about ready to switch.

Really a non-story, or just points out the macheads are smart enough not to buy into a ".0 " release -- just like a new Windows version often isn't worth switching to until after the first service pack.

I don't really think that article is fair. I've seen both OS's side by side and OS X is so much nicer. Then again I'm not a seasoned Mac user, but if I had a Mac (which I'd like) I'd definitely run OS X. The coming "Jaguar" release of OS X this summer looks even more promising. How long did Windows 95 suck? Oh yeah... until Windows 2000...

I belive it shows an extreme ammount of ignorance.

The only reason my company hasn't actively pursued upgrading to X is because Quark XPress is not native.

you're happy about an actual alternative to the windows empire not doing well? you've seen the result of good competition between amd and intel, but you're happy about a lack of competition to a bloated piece of software that rarely addresses customer concerns and goes through UI changes that usually do nothing to enchance productivity and usually degrade it since you have to relearn things?

shouldn't this be in the operating systems forum anyway?

Here's a novel idea for Jobs and the MacHeads:
Port it to x86,

Wow....

I'd use it. Maybe not as my primary OS, but I'd certainly put it on one of my boxes...it's a very nice OS.

i think that would defeat the purpose of getting a large OSX following :p

Well, that depends on what that purpose is :)
If he wants to the OS X usage to be less disappointing, he could tap into a market that is hungry for a change from a strict diet of forced-upgrading for the last 10 years or so to something at least different (and prettier) if not flat-out better.

OTOH, if he wants to have world-domination in the hardware AND OS land, then it would defeat the purpose. He should learn a lesson from IBM and OS/2--it's not easy to dominate hardware and OS markets at the same time.

Not just "looks like".. it is[/b] the retarded cousin. I can't tell you how many times a single app crash in OS9 (or earlier) would take out the entire OS, forcing a reboot. Much like, uh, Win95/98..

I have nothing against PowerPC architecture; I just believe that if Apple opened up licensing for the hardware, the enthusiast market would catch on. Imagine a Mac with the equivalent of a KT266A (or newer) chipset.. (or, god forbid, with Rambus PC1066)

I'm a complete nut when it comes to Macs. What CPUs do they use? And, more important, what chipsets?

That's the short answer, but think about it--the OS market and the hardware market are both extremely competitive. Not to mention all of the other software "pies" that IBM had and still has their fingers in. There's only so much money you can spend on marketing, and dividing the money between the various products ultimately meant that none of them took off very well. Trying to market OS/2-Warp against Win95 AND trying to push your PCs against the burgeoning monsters like Packard Bell, Gateway2k, Compaq and others was a deadly uphill battle.

Additionally, Microsoft had insane OEM deals going on. Everybody who bought a PC had it pre-loaded with Win95....why would they bother changing to OS/2?
It was not to happen.

I used to use OS/2, but I found it to be a little buggy. Admititdly win95 was buggy also. OS/2 took forever to install updated hardware and some hardware support was lacking, mostly because everyone was building for windows. I wish I could still run OS/2 on my machine. It would be pretty neat just to have around.

I would love to have a mac with OS X. I'm always trying out Linux and alternative software.

Apple just needs to get a few more developers to finish porting their software. With a little more hardware inovation they could be back in a very good posistion.

I saw them talking about the new Apple notebooks on tv. The things cost over three thousand freaking dollars for one with an 800MHz processor! WTF? I totally did a double take. That alone is enough to reaffirm my belief that Macs suck.
