Kinda a bogus complaint. Anyone that enables automatic link/download/update "features" or for that matter does not clear cookies deserves what they get.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. If other companies can't get away with this stuff, then neither should Netscape. Must feel great to be on the defending side of a lawsuit, eh Nutscrape?

Yeah, no kidding, what a pointless complaint. Nothing compared what Microsoft has been doing. This goes out to all the IE-infatuated members of the forum. I'm tired of all the Netscape bashing. If it wasn't for monopoly abuse, it would not have been this way.

No, just that no companies are holy or attempt to be goody-goodies. Or else they'd be out of business, but I think Microsoft stepped out of line.

All this issues about consumer privacy... It's not like they are going to sell our credit card number, which is a crime, or abetting one.

One can argue that companies collect customer info can actually benefit the consumers, tailoring to their preferences and making say, shopping, easier. In fact, this is more true than people having their privacy violated.

yata, did you actually read the article? It said they only look at .exe and .zip files. Like that can help them to serve us better. If they were just looking at the websites we visit... fine. But they are only targeting .zip and .exe files... why?

Companies do it all the time. They treat our private information like it is their property to do with as they please. Does the word "stalker" come to mind.

I liked the Netscape browser, but my data is my data.

F*ck AOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I knew better, but just to be fare to AOL I tried their 250 free hours. Was not completely happy with their service or software, but I was very pissed when they charged my card for 6 months of service at 1 time not monthly like they said on the phone. I was suppose to get service for $20 a month, but they what they charged me equaled $26 a month (So much for student discount). I call the customer service and was harassed for trying to cancel service and final had to say, " I want my dam service stopped." He still had the nerve to ask again, "What is wrong with AOL?" I had answered this question once to the same person on the same call. The question repeating was not the only thing I considered harassing. They still charged my card for service I never received. I am generally a smart shopper and a brand loyal shopper (Big or Small name brand). That is to say if a company sales me a good product I look to them first for products in the future. Customer service and support are key. AOL has lost at least 1 customer forever. This is about the time I would say, "I told you so!"

I must add AOL to my "is suck" list!!!!
AOL is Suck and then some!
AOL 4.0 is Suck and then some!
AOL 5.0 is Suck and then some!
AOL x.x is Suck and then some!
Why do you think they send so many AOL CDs in the mail? Because AOL is suck and must use repeated efforts to brain wash people.

F AOL F AOL F AOL F AOL F AOL F AOL................................

LBM1A: Zonealarm doesn't do cookie blocking. I use http://www.junkbuster.com/ Junkbuster for that.

What exactly is "SmartDownload"? Is it just a jazzy marketing name for that box that pops up when I'm downloading a file? Help me out here.

Perhaps they wanted to know which kind of programs or plugins the users like to have, so they can include more from those categories on their site.

The article is not very clear, especially that part about the cookie... Software cookie? It'll at most display what browser or OS you're using. Unless you asked to enter some info when installing the file. Not clear...

I think SmartDownload has this feature where it'll continue where it left off in the middle of downloading if you disconnect and get online again.

I agree with Scifione,Aol did ther same thing to my BANK ACCOUNT. When i told them that i did not want thier service and told them to turn it off they charged my account for 3months. I called them up ,furious and determined to cancel AND get my money back since they overdrew my account for $20.00 because they charged me in advance. They had the balls to ask me if i would accept 1 freee month as payment for what now cost me $50.00 in bank fees. OUTRAGIOUS!!!

This is bad, real bad. But we can allways wonder what information IE or just plainly Windows is sending to Microsoft. Remember once that on the old Microsoft page that when you loaded it up you downloaded about 15-20kb but somehow you uploaded around 200kb.

Well... sometimes I get worked up too fast.

I thought that Smart Download was a regular feature of the browser.

It turns out that it is a separate program that you can download from their site. Am I wrong?

Since I never downloaded anything else besides the browser I don't think I have anything to worry. Besides I just did a test with my firewall and didn't see anything suspicious. Phew!

But for those of you that got fouled up by Netscapaol you can get more info about smart download on their site.

http://home.netscape.com/computing/download/smartdownload/ib/about.html
http://home.netscape.com/newsref/pr/newsrelease713.html

After reading the faqs I don't think the guy will win this suit, regardless of how screwy Netscape intentions were.

Real Networks got out of it easily, and nobody complains about MediaPlayer contacting their codec page on its own and not giving the user a choice whether to allow it or not. Who knows what info is collected by the codec page?

I'm glad I can block all these unwanted connections with my faithfull software firewall. I have IE and RealPlayer in chains :)

This is stupid and just goes to point out further that lawyers are scum sucking dirt bags wasting ppl's time and money. If you are silly enough to use AOL and to use the "idiot proff" options like smart download you deserve to have "information" gathered about you. But what harm does this do to a person to know what .exe & .zip files the DL? NOTHING. Who gives a sh!t? What do you think a million other businesses do who gather and/or sell your other personal information that leads to much more intrusive and annoying business practices? How many times have you actually said "Gee, think i'll go out and give out my phone number and mailing address so that I can receive 10 jillion pounds of fu*kin junk mail and get all those wonderful prospecting phone calls at supper time". THOSE are the bastards that the gov't. should be after. If i had a penny for every POS unsolicited junk mail or phone call i got i'd be living high off the hog boys & girls. Yes, junk email is annoying, but it can be avoided or easily dispossed off. But junk email does not call me early on Saturday morning, or at supper time. Nor does junk email kill millions of trees and other resources and fill up my friggin' recycle bins that i have to take to the dump. This guy with the lawsuit against AOL & Nutscrape should be bitch slapped and told to smarten up and stop wasting time and looking for the easy way to make money. People like this make me sick.
j
ps: sorry to rant & rave, but i really hate this kinda crap. wish i could just slap someone.
