Hehe....my first road race as a Cat2 will be 102 miles.

Nice! Good luck!

I just completed my first century last Saturday. A friend of mine did LOTAJA the same day which is 200 miles. He's a CAT1 racer.

Nice job, man. I think every cyclist remembers the first time he did 100 miles in a day. :)

I'm guessing we're going to finish in under 4 hours. A lot of these guys were at a local century a few weeks ago and we finished in 4 hours on the nose. :Q

It was certainly an effort and a ride I'll never forget. It's interesting because you eat constantly but there comes a point where you just feel weak like you won't be able to finish (maybe this is mental) but then after fighting through that for about 10 miles you get a second wind. I've never pushed myself for so long before. I'll tell you though, my training is what got me through the event. That and the fact that I took a few days off prior to the event to rest up. I didn't even feel sore at all the next day. I didn't get back on the bike until today for my commute in to work.

4 hours for a 100+ miles? That's pretty impressive. I did my century in a bit over 6 hours. My CAT1 racer friend did the LOTAJA ride in 10 hours but there are 3 really tough climbs on that ride. He said he blew up on the second climb. The race winner was around 9 hours and was a teammate of his.

The thing about digging that deep is that once you get over the initial exhaustion, you come back way stronger than you were before. It's the kind of training effect you just can't get with shorter rides.

I did Seattle to Portland a few years ago. That was the first and last time I've ever done 200 miles in a day. 100 racing miles is definitely going to suck, but at least I'm not going to be putting in an 8 hour shift. ;)

OMG you've upgraded to Cat 2? Sheesh, I'm paying attention (not!). I've gotten to the point where a 100 mile ride is not that big of a deal, but racing 100+ miles? YIKES!

So question, did you go up to Vermont for the Green Mountain Stage Race or is that out of your range? (I ask because I spectated the third stage)

I didn't go up this year, but I may give that a whirl next year if I can sort out the travel and get my team to come along.

I'd give the organizers thumbs up for a cool race, but I heard that the Burlington Crit, the last stage, was quite dangerous (much carnage from the six turns in laround one km). The climb up the backside of the Appalachian Gap during stage three (which I spectated) was awesome, so much drama. The French would have loved it for all the suffering. :D

Edit: and your field had a Euro-style sit-down protest cancelling a stage. Classic stuff!

You're at Cat2 racer? That's pretty hardcore, man! I sometimes ride with local Cat4 and Cat3 riders, and they are already fast enough. :p

Good luck with all of your future Cat2 races!

Thanks. :)

If all goes well, maybe I can move up to Cat1 in a year or two and go to nationals. I'm sure I'd get annihilated, but it'd be fun just to say I went.

Good Luck, I hope you do well... I've finished a few century rides (heck, most of them were simply because I chose to ride my bike rather than drive, especially since I didn't have a car at the time.) But, racing for 100 miles is a whole heckuva lot different than simply riding that distance. Then again, doesn't it really come down to who has the most energy left after 90 or so miles?

Sorry, I basically came home and passed out last night. :p

Anyway, the race went pretty well. My job for the day way to make sure I grabbed our musette bag in the feed zone each lap and then distributed bottles/gels to my teammates. Got that accomplished both laps. On the last lap, a break went up the road with 4 riders that eventually gained over a minute on the peloton. One other team, myself and one of my teammates ran that down with about 4 miles to go at which point all hell broke loose with people attacking and trying to set up their sprinters. I did my best to give our guy a wheel but ended up getting chopped by some idiot and lost all my momentum. He found a hole anyway and finished 10th (just in the money) while I rolled in for 35th. I think we had close to 100 starters and only 40 official finishers so I'm pretty happy with how my day went. :)

Best part; parking for the event was right on a lake, so we all just jumped in at the finish to rinse all the salt and road grime away. Seriously the best thing ever. :D

I'd be happy to oblige, but this would surely be banworthy on the new-and-safe-for-the-kids ATOT.

Well done! Finishing with the bunch in your first Cat 2 race would be a nice accomplishment but it sounds like you did more still. Congrats!
